How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Duct Cleaning Company? (The Mailer Math, 2026)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

On Angi's 2026 air duct cleaning average of $390, a missed booking call costs a duct cleaning company about $258 once you count the dryer vent add-on. A caller who only wants a price is worth about $39. In a mailer month with 300 new-customer calls, missing 30% costs about $14,478, and $390 of the postage you paid rang a phone nobody picked up.

Short answer: on Angi's 2026 average of $390, a missed call from someone ready to book costs a duct cleaning company about $258. A caller who only wants a price is worth about $39. In a mailer month, missing 30% of 300 new-customer calls costs about $14,478. And there's a second bill nobody counts: about $390 of postage went out to make those missed calls ring.

About the author: I'm Justin McKelvey, and I own Local Call AI, an AI receptionist for contractors. So yes, I sell one of the fixes. The math works the same with whoever answers your phone.

Your phone rings because you paid it to

Most trades get calls when something breaks. Duct cleaning mostly gets calls when a postcard lands. That changes the math. A missed roofing call is lost revenue. A missed duct call is lost revenue plus marketing money you already spent.

USPS Every Door Direct Mail runs $0.26 a piece in postage at retail, before you print a single card. Drop 5,000 cards and the postage alone is $1,300. If that drop brings 300 new-customer calls, each ring cost you about $4.33 before anyone said hello. Miss 90 of them and $390 of postage went to voicemail. That's one average job, gone before the job was even lost.

Not every caller is worth the same

Our duct cleaning answering service guide plans a mailer month at 376 calls: 160 people ready to book, 140 who want a price, 16 "my dryer smells hot" calls, and 60 existing customers. Here's what each kind of new caller is worth, with our assumptions spelled out.

Caller What they're worth if answered What a missed one costs
Ready to book (80% book, $430 with add-ons) $344.00 $258.00
Price only (10% book, $390) $39.00 $39.00
Dryer safety call (90% book, $135) $121.50 $91.13
Two-system house, ready to book ($820) $656.00 $492.00

Where the $430 comes from: Angi's $390 average from 21,664 verified projects, plus a dryer vent add-on. Angi says that runs $100 when it's bundled, and we assume 40% of jobs take it. The $135 dryer call is the middle of Angi's $100 to $170 standalone price. A homeowner who gets your voicemail usually calls the next postcard on the counter, so we assume a callback saves a quarter of missed booking calls and none of the price shoppers.

Two things jump out. A booking caller is worth about 6.6 times a price shopper, so the phone's real job is to sort them in the first 30 seconds. And a two-story house with two systems doubles the ticket. The EPA prices duct cleaning per heating and cooling system, at $450 to $1,000 each, so "how many systems do you have?" is the most valuable question on the call.

A mailer month, missed at 30%

Two vans out, the owner in an attic, the phone in the truck. Say you miss 30% of the mailer week:

  • 48 missed booking calls × $258 = $12,384
  • 42 missed price-only calls × $39 = $1,638
  • 5 missed dryer calls × $91.13 = $455.63

That's $14,477.63, and 85.5% of it is the ready-to-book caller. Answer everything and the drop books about 142 jobs, so postage costs $9.15 a job. Miss 30% and you book about 109, so the same postage costs $11.93 a job. The mailer didn't get worse. The phone did.

When a missed duct call costs you nothing

The EPA's own guidance says cleaning is "probably unnecessary" when nobody in the house has allergies and there's no visible mold, vermin or heavy dust. An honest shop talks some callers out of the job, and plenty of price shoppers are calling five companies for the lowest number they can find. Missing those costs you almost nothing. The loss is the caller who already decided and just needed someone to pick up.

Same goes for the whole calendar. A month with no mailer looks nothing like this one. Duct cleaning is the opposite of an HVAC shop, where the expensive call is a no-cool emergency in July, as our HVAC missed-call math shows. Your expensive calls come the week you mail.

What the phone should do on a duct call

Ask how many systems and roughly how many vents. Ask if they want the dryer vent done too. Give your pricing sentence, the one you wrote, and nothing else. Book the slot. On our plans the AI doesn't quote a whole-house price you didn't write, doesn't tell a caller their house has mold, and doesn't promise their allergies will clear up. The EPA tells homeowners to ask the company to show them the mold, and your phone shouldn't be the one claiming it.

What answering it costs

Our plans: Standard, $297 a month with 250 call minutes. Connected, $497 with 500. Concierge, from $750 with 1,000. Each minute past the plan is $0.35, and every plan answers in English or Spanish. The 376-call mailer month runs about 820 minutes, which is $496.50 on Standard. That's covered by about 2 of the 48 booking calls above. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. Everything else is on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a duct cleaning company?

About $258 for a caller ready to book, on Angi's 2026 average of $390 plus a dryer vent add-on and our booking assumptions. A price-only caller is worth about $39. A two-system house is worth about $492.

How much does air duct cleaning cost in 2026?

Angi's national average is $390 from 21,664 verified projects, with most homeowners paying $271 to $509, or about $35 a vent. The EPA puts typical service at $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system.

What does a duct cleaning mailer cost per call?

USPS EDDM retail postage is $0.26 a piece, so 5,000 cards is $1,300 before printing. At 300 new-customer calls that's about $4.33 a call. Your printing cost and response rate change it, so use your own numbers.

Is a dryer vent call worth answering?

Yes. Angi puts standalone dryer vent cleaning at $100 to $170, and a "my dryer smells hot" caller usually books today. It's also a safety call, so the phone should flag it ahead of a price question.

What does an answering service cost a duct cleaning company?
