How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Locksmith? (2026 Math, Day vs After Hours)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

In a worked example for a two-van locksmith taking 300 calls a month, the 61 calls it misses cost about $9,354 in revenue, or $183 per missed call from a real customer. A missed daytime call costs about $83; a missed after-hours call costs about $254, because the night call carries HomeAdvisor's $150 to $250 surcharge and the caller has booked someone else within minutes. After-hours calls are 59% of the missed calls and 81% of the lost revenue.

In short: in a worked example for a two-van locksmith taking 300 calls a month, the 61 it misses cost about $9,354 in revenue, or $183 for every missed call from a real customer. When the call comes in decides most of that. A missed daytime call is worth about $83. A missed after-hours call is worth about $254, because a 2 AM lockout carries an after-hours surcharge and the caller has booked another locksmith before you could call back. After-hours calls are 59% of the missed calls and 81% of the lost revenue.

A roofer or a plumber can sometimes win a missed caller back with a fast callback. A locksmith mostly cannot. The ticket is small (HomeAdvisor puts the 2026 average at $163), the caller is standing outside a locked door or car, and they dial the next number on the list within a minute or two. So the question for a locksmith is not only how many calls you miss, but which hours you miss them in.

How many calls does a locksmith miss?

CallRail's January 2025 study of 1.1 million leads found home-service businesses miss 14% of calls. We use that for daytime hours. After 6 PM a locksmith is usually one person on call who is driving, on a job or asleep, so we assume 30% of after-hours calls go unanswered. Both rates, and the 180 day / 120 night split of a 300-call month, are planning assumptions. Swap in your carrier's numbers.

That gives 25 missed daytime calls and 36 missed after-hours calls, 61 in all.

Why a callback rarely saves a lockout

In CallRail's September 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business doesn't answer and 82% said they'll call a competitor. For a lockout the second number is the one that matters. Nobody locked out of a car at night waits for a callback; they keep dialing until someone picks up. In the tables below we assume a callback loses 95% of lockouts it would have won, against 30% for a rekey, where the customer is planning ahead and will wait until morning.

What a missed daytime call is worth

Job values are the midpoints of HomeAdvisor's 2026 locksmith ranges, read October 15, 2026: unlocking a house $65 to $200, unlocking a car $50 to $300, replacing a car transponder key $100 to $400, rekeying $80 to $150 per lock, opening a safe $50 to $500. The mix, booking chances and callback losses are our assumptions.

Missed daytime call Missed Job value used Booked if answered Lost even after callback Revenue lost
House lockout 5 $132.50 80% 95% $503.50
Car lockout 5 $175 80% 95% $665.00
Car key replacement (transponder) 4 $250 60% 70% $420.00
Rekey or lock change 6 $115 50% 30% $103.50
Safe opening or commercial lock work 1 $275 50% 40% $55.00
Not a job (sales calls, wrong numbers) 4 $0 n/a n/a $0
Total 25 $1,747.00

Each row multiplies four things: missed calls, job value, the chance you would have booked it, and the share a callback does not recover. Car lockout: 5 × $175 × 80% × 95% = $665. Across the 21 daytime calls from real customers, that is $83 per missed call. On a small daytime ticket, one missed call is an annoyance rather than a crisis.

What a missed after-hours call is worth

HomeAdvisor reports an after-hours surcharge of $150 to $250 for nights, weekends and holidays. We add the $200 midpoint to lockouts and car keys after 6 PM, and leave rekeys at the day price, since those get booked for the morning.

Missed after-hours call Missed Job value used Booked if answered Lost even after callback Revenue lost
Car lockout 14 $375 80% 95% $3,990.00
House lockout 12 $332.50 80% 95% $3,032.40
Car key replacement (transponder) 3 $450 60% 70% $567.00
Rekey or lock change 1 $115 50% 30% $17.25
Not a job 6 $0 n/a n/a $0
Total 36 $7,606.65

Spread over 30 real customers, that is $254 per missed after-hours call, about three times the daytime figure. Two things stack up. The night mix leans toward lockouts, the calls a callback cannot rescue. And the surcharge is real money: price the same calls without it and the night loss drops to $3,402.65, so $4,204, or 55% of the after-hours loss, is the surcharge itself. The hours most locksmiths would rather sleep through are where most of the money is.

For comparison, our roofer version of this math lands at $615 per real call in an ordinary month, because one storm claim can be a whole roof. A locksmith loses less per call and makes it up in volume and in the 2 AM premium.

Car, home or commercial: which missed call costs the most?

After hours, the car lockout. It is the most common night call in this example, it carries the highest value of the two lockouts ($375 with the surcharge) and nobody waits on it, so it is 52% of the after-hours loss. A missed transponder key call is worth more per job ($450 at night) but is rarer, and a stranded driver who needs a key cut and programmed will sometimes wait for a callback. Commercial work and safes are the opposite of a lockout: higher tickets, slower decisions, and a callback the next morning still wins most of them, which is why that row is small even though the job is not. Our 2026 missed-call cost research covers the trades with bigger tickets.

How much of this rests on our guesses?

The booking chances do the most work, and the result moves in step with them: halve every one and the month still loses about $4,677. Remember too that these are ticket totals before fuel, key blanks and the tech's time, so hold them against your margin rather than your bank balance. It also leaves out the rekey that often follows a lost-key lockout and the property manager who keeps calling the locksmith that answered first, both left out because they are easy to overstate.

What it costs to answer a locksmith's phone at night

On Local Call AI's published plans: Standard is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected $497 with 500, Concierge from $750 with 1,000, and every plan bills $0.35 a minute past its allowance with no night, weekend or holiday surcharge. A lockout call is short (where are you, what vehicle or door, here is the price), so we use 3 minutes.

What you forward Calls, minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every call, day and night 300 calls, 900 min $524.50 $637.00 from $750.00
After-hours calls only (6 PM to 8 AM) 120 calls, 360 min $335.50 $497.00 from $750.00
Only calls nobody picks up 61 calls, 183 min $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00

For a locksmith the middle row is the one to look at. Forwarding only after hours costs $335.50 on Standard in this example, and one after-hours car lockout at HomeAdvisor's midpoints ($175 plus a $200 surcharge) is $375. You pay for the bigger plans for what they do at night, not for minutes: Connected texts the call straight to whoever is on call, and Concierge can live-transfer a child-locked-in-a-car emergency to your phone. Our locksmith answering service comparison lines up the other services, and every plan detail is on our pricing page.

Find your own number in ten minutes

Export two weeks of missed calls from your phone carrier and draw a line at 6 PM. For each side, count the lockouts, keys, rekeys and junk calls you can identify (a quick return call usually tells you), then price them with your own rates and your own after-hours fee instead of HomeAdvisor's midpoints. If the night column is bigger than the day column, the fix is the night, not more office staff. The emergency locksmith answering service setup covers the wake-me-only-for-real-emergencies routing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a locksmith?

In our worked 2026 example, a two-van locksmith missing 61 of 300 calls a month loses about $9,354 in revenue, or $183 per missed call from a real customer. A missed daytime call costs about $83 and a missed after-hours call about $254. Job values are midpoints of HomeAdvisor's 2026 locksmith ranges; the call mix and booking rates are assumptions you should replace with your own.

Why is a missed after-hours locksmith call worth more?

Two reasons. HomeAdvisor reports a $150 to $250 surcharge on night, weekend and holiday locksmith calls, and night calls are mostly lockouts, where the caller books whoever answers first. In our example the surcharge alone is $4,204, or 55% of the after-hours loss.

Does calling back a missed lockout call work?

Rarely. A locked-out caller keeps dialing until someone answers, usually within minutes, and in CallRail's September 2025 survey 82% of consumers said they'll call a competitor when a business doesn't pick up. Callbacks still work for rekeys, safe work and commercial jobs, where the customer is planning ahead.

Is a missed car lockout worse than a missed house lockout?

In our example, yes, slightly. Car unlocks average $175 at HomeAdvisor's midpoint against $132.50 for a house, and after hours the car lockout is the most common call, so it is 52% of the night loss. A house lockout with a child or pet inside is the exception: treat it as an emergency regardless of value.

What does an answering service cost a locksmith?

Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes and $0.35 a minute after, with no after-hours surcharge. At 3 minutes a call, forwarding only after-hours calls costs $335.50 a month in our 120-night-call example, and answering every call costs $524.50. Connected ($497, 500 minutes) adds instant text alerts to your on-call tech and files each call into Jobber or JobNimbus, the only two integrations.
