How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Towing Company? (2026 Night vs Day Math)
In short
In a worked example for a three-truck towing company, the 50 calls it misses in a 260-call month cost about $4,494 in revenue, or about $132 per missed cash caller. The 32 calls missed after 8 PM carry 77% of it, about $145 each, against $102 in the day. A stranded driver does not wait, so calling them back an hour later wins back almost nothing. Tow rates are from AAA's October 2026 towing guide: a base fee of $84 to $150 plus $2.25 to $5.00 a mile.
In short: in a worked example for a three-truck towing company, the 50 calls nobody answers in a 260-call month cost about $4,494 in revenue, or about $132 per missed cash caller. The 32 calls missed after 8 PM carry 77% of it, about $145 each, against $102 for a missed daytime caller. And in towing, unlike almost every other trade, calling back does not fix it: a driver stuck on a shoulder hires whoever answers first.
Who is writing this: I'm Justin McKelvey, and I own Local Call AI, the AI receptionist company whose blog you are reading. The math does not depend on our product. Our prices come up once, in their own section near the end.
Most of what makes a missed call expensive in other trades is the job behind it: a water heater, a roof, a new AC system. A tow does not work like that. The ticket is a hook-up fee plus miles, it is decided in under two minutes, and the caller is standing somewhere they cannot leave. So the questions that decide the cost are different: how far, what hour, and whether the person can wait. As of October 2026, AAA's own towing guide (updated October 3, 2026) says a driver without roadside coverage should expect a base fee of $84 to $150 plus $2.25 to $5.00 a mile. That is the price list we use.
Your public number is the cash line
One thing to settle before the math. AAA members request a tow through the AAA app, website or the number on their card, and the club sends one of its contracted providers. AAA's roadside FAQ also says a member who calls a non-AAA company first is reimbursed only up to the club's contract rate. So the call that reaches your Google listing at 2 AM is mostly someone with no coverage, someone whose coverage will not reach (AAA Classic covers 5-mile tows), or a member who gave up on the wait. Those are the cash calls, the ones you set the price on.
That is why, in the model below, calls about club jobs, rotation jobs and "where is my car" count as $0. They take time on the phone, but the money on them is already decided somewhere else.
The company we model
Three trucks, an owner who still drives, and a day dispatcher who goes home at 8 PM. After that the phone forwards to whoever is on call, who is usually on a hook. One October month, 260 calls on the company line:
- Day, 7 AM to 8 PM: 180 calls. With a dispatcher at the desk we assume 10% are missed, which is 18 calls.
- Night, 8 PM to 7 AM: 80 calls. With one driver answering between jobs, or asleep, we assume 40% are missed, which is 32 calls.
Both missed rates are planning numbers, not measured data. Our 2026 missed-call cost research gathers what published studies say about unanswered calls in home and local services. Your carrier's call log, split at the hour your dispatcher leaves, beats any of them.
What one missed tow is worth
A local tow of about 10 loaded miles, at the middle of AAA's ranges ($117 base plus $3.625 a mile), is $153.25. A long tow of 50 miles is $298.25. At night we add $77.50, the middle of the $5 to $150 after-hours charge in HomeGuide's towing cost guide. That guide is from 2022, so treat the night fee as the softest number here and swap in your own. Jumps, lockouts and tire changes have no tow miles, so we price them at $84, the bottom of AAA's base fee. That one is our assumption, not a published price.
Then two chances. The chance you would have booked the caller if you had answered: 75% for a local tow, 60% for a long tow (those callers are more likely to compare prices), 70% for roadside. And the share a callback does not win back: 95% for a local tow or a roadside call, because by the time you call back, someone else's truck is already there. Only the long tow, often a dead car being moved to a shop tomorrow, gets a softer 70%.
The day and the night, side by side
| Missed call | Day missed | Night missed | Value day / night | Booked if answered | Lost after callback | Revenue lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local tow, about 10 miles | 6 | 14 | $153.25 / $230.75 | 75% | 95% | $2,956.88 |
| Long tow, about 50 miles | 2 | 2 | $298.25 / $375.75 | 60% | 70% | $566.16 |
| Jump, lockout, tire | 2 | 8 | $84.00 / $161.50 | 70% | 95% | $970.90 |
| Club, rotation and status calls | 4 | 4 | $0 today | $0 | ||
| Not a job (spam, out of area) | 4 | 4 | $0 | $0 | ||
| Total | 18 | 32 | $4,493.94 |
Each cell is missed calls times value times the booking chance, times the share a callback does not recover. One missed local tow at night: $230.75 × 75% × 95% = $164.41.
Split by hour, the day loses $1,017.39 on 10 cash callers, or $101.74 each. The night loses $3,476.54 on 24, or $144.86 each. Across all 34 cash callers it is $132.18 a missed call, and $89.88 spread over all 50.
Why the callback is worth almost nothing here
In our HVAC and plumbing math, an hour-later callback still wins back a real share of the work, because a homeowner with a slow drain can wait. A driver on the shoulder of a highway at 11 PM cannot. In this example, the 30 stranded callers on the local-tow and roadside rows were worth $4,134.50 if you had picked up. Calling every one of them back an hour later recovers about $207 of that. In towing, "we'll call them back" is not a plan. Either the phone gets answered while the caller is still on it, or the job is gone.
That also changes what "answered" has to mean. A message in a portal at 6 AM is a callback. What saves a tow is the details (where, what vehicle, does it roll, how they are paying) reaching the driver in the truck within a minute.
The night is 77%, and the fee is the smaller part of it
Night calls carry $3,476.54 of the $4,493.94. You would expect the after-hours fee to explain that, and it is part of it, but price the same night calls without the fee and the loss is still $2,226.08. The fee is $1,250.46, about 36% of the night loss. The rest is simply that 40% of the night phone goes unanswered while only 10% of the day phone does.
That is a different shape from a locksmith's. In our locksmith missed-call math, the after-hours surcharge was 55% of the night loss, because a lockout is short and the surcharge is most of the ticket. A tow has miles behind it, so the night problem in towing is mostly coverage, not price.
How much rests on our guesses?
The base fee and the per-mile rate are AAA's. Everything else is ours to be replaced. Halve every booking chance and the month still loses $2,246.97. Distance moves it too: every extra 10 loaded miles adds $36.25 to a tow at AAA's middle rate. HomeGuide's older guide puts a 5- to 10-mile local tow at $50 to $125, below our $153.25, so a price-competitive or rural market should use a lower local ticket. We left out storage (HomeGuide lists $30 to $80 a day), winch-outs, heavy-duty work and police rotation, which pays on its own terms. A shop that does a lot of accident towing to its own yard will lose more per missed call than this.
What it costs to answer a towing phone
Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Every plan bills $0.35 a minute past its allowance, and English and Spanish are on every plan. A tow intake (exact location, is the caller out of traffic, vehicle and drive type, does it roll, how they are paying) takes about 3 minutes; a roadside call about 2.5; anything else about 1.5. The AI never quotes a tow price. It gives whatever policy you set and takes the details so you can.
| What you forward | Minutes | Standard ($297) | Connected ($497) | Concierge (from $750) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Every call in the month (260) | 620 | $426.50 | $539.00 | from $750.00 |
| Only calls after 8 PM (80) | 205 | $297.00 | $497.00 | from $750.00 |
| Only the calls nobody picks up (50) | 121 | $297.00 | $497.00 | from $750.00 |
Two honest notes. Two missed night tows at $230.75 cost more than answering every call of the month on Standard. And for this trade Connected is the plan we would point at, not for its minutes but because it texts the call to the on-call driver the moment it ends, which is the only kind of answer a stranded caller waits for. One limit to know first: we do not connect to Towbook, TRAXERO, Ranger or the motor-club portals. Jobber and JobNimbus are the only systems we integrate with, so the call reaches you as a text, an email and a transcript, and someone still keys the ticket. Our towing answering service comparison lines up the other options, including when a night dispatcher beats all of them, and every plan detail is on the pricing page.
Run your own month
Pull one month of call logs from your carrier and split them at the hour your dispatcher leaves. Mark the unanswered calls in each half, call back a sample and sort them: local tow, long tow, roadside, club or status, not a job. Put your own hook-up fee, mileage and night charge on each row. Our missed-call calculator will total it. If the night half looks like this one, the fix is not more callbacks. It is someone, or something, answering while the caller is still on the line.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a missed call cost a towing company?
In our worked 2026 example, a three-truck towing company that misses 50 of 260 calls in a month loses about $4,494 in revenue, or about $132 per missed cash caller. Missed night calls cost about $145 each and daytime ones about $102. Tow rates are from AAA's October 2026 towing guide ($84 to $150 base plus $2.25 to $5.00 a mile); call counts, missed rates, booking chances and callback losses are assumptions to replace with your own.
Can a towing company just call missed callers back?
Rarely in time. A driver on a shoulder calls the next number within a minute or two, so we assume a callback loses 95% of local tows and roadside calls. In our example, calling all 30 of those stranded callers back an hour later wins back about $207 of the $4,135 they were worth.
Do motor-club calls count as missed revenue?
Mostly not on your public number. AAA members request service through AAA's app, website or card number, and AAA's FAQ says members who call a non-AAA company first are reimbursed only up to AAA's contract rate. That is why we treat the calls on your own line as cash calls and price club and status calls at $0.
How much is a missed after-hours tow worth?
A local 10-mile tow at AAA's middle rates is $153.25. Adding $77.50 for after hours (the middle of HomeGuide's $5 to $150 range), a missed night tow costs about $164 in our example once the booking chance and callback loss are applied, against about $109 for the same tow during the day.
What does an after-hours answering service cost a towing company?
On Local Call AI, forwarding only the calls after 8 PM in our example is 205 minutes, which fits inside Standard's 250, so $297 a month. Answering every call in a 260-call month is 620 minutes: $426.50 on Standard or $539 on Connected, which texts each call to your on-call driver. Overage on every plan is $0.35 a minute.
