How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Generator Company? (2026 Outage-Month Math)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

In a worked example for a residential standby generator dealer, the 15 calls it misses in a normal 150-call month cost about $4,578 in revenue, and the 110 it misses in a 430-call outage month cost about $48,332. The outage service calls are the loud ones, 60 of the 110 missed, but only 15% of the loss. The 44 missed sales calls in the weeks after the outage carry 84%, about $928 each. Install and service prices are from HomeAdvisor's generator cost pages.

In short: in a worked example for a residential standby generator dealer, the 15 calls nobody answers in a normal 150-call month cost about $4,578. In a month with one regional outage, the same dealer misses 110 of 430 calls and loses about $48,332, over ten times as much. The surprise is where it goes. The outage service calls are the loud ones and most of the misses, but they are only 15% of the loss. The 84% is in the 44 sales calls missed in the weeks after the lights come back, about $928 each.

Before the numbers: I'm Justin McKelvey, I own Local Call AI, and this blog is ours. Our plan prices show up once, in their own section near the end, and nothing above that section changes if you never buy from us.

A generator company's phone has two lives. Most months it is maintenance scheduling and a steady trickle of people asking what a whole-home unit costs. Then the grid goes down for a day across the county, every owner whose unit showed an error calls at once, and a week later the neighbors who sat in the dark start calling to buy. HomeAdvisor's install guide puts the average whole-house generator job at $5,156, with most homeowners paying $1,512 to $8,803. Its maintenance guide puts a service visit at $274 on average. Those two numbers, and how differently the two kinds of caller behave, decide what a missed call costs.

The dealer in this example

A residential standby dealer with roughly 800 units under maintenance, one office person, and techs who are on the road whenever the weather turns. These are the same two months we used to price the phone plans in our generator answering service comparison:

  • Normal month: 150 calls (70 sales inquiries, 60 maintenance, 20 service). We assume 10% go unanswered: 15 missed.
  • Outage month: 430 calls (220 sales, 60 maintenance, 150 service). The service wave lands all at once while the office may have no power, so we assume 40% of service calls are missed. The sales wave is spread over the following weeks but the techs are still catching up, so 20%. Maintenance stays at 10%. That is 110 missed calls.

All of those counts and rates are planning assumptions, not measured customer data. For what published studies say about unanswered calls in home services, see our 2026 missed-call cost research. Your own carrier log from the last outage is the number that matters.

Pricing each kind of call

  • Sales inquiry: $5,156, HomeAdvisor's average install. HomeAdvisor's own budgeting advice to homeowners is to "collect at least three quotes", so we assume an answered caller becomes your job only 30% of the time.
  • Service call from an owner: $274, HomeAdvisor's average generator service visit. It is your unit, so 90% book if you answer. Real repairs can run higher (HomeAdvisor lists a stator and rotor at $250 to $1,500 and engine work at $50 to $2,000), so $274 is the conservative end.
  • Maintenance from a new customer: $274, booked 60% of the time. Maintenance calls from existing owners are priced at $0 today; they would have scheduled anyway.

The last column in each table is the share of missed callers a callback does not win back.

A normal month

Missed call Missed Value used Becomes your job if answered Lost even after callback Revenue lost
Sales inquiry (new install) 7 $5,156 30% 40% $4,331.04
Service call from an owner 2 $274 90% 30% $147.96
Maintenance, new customer 2 $274 60% 30% $98.64
Maintenance, existing owner 4 $0 today $0
Total 15 $4,577.64

Sales inquiry: 7 × $5,156 × 30% × 40% = $4,331.04. That is $305.18 per missed call across all 15, and $618.72 per missed sales call. In a quiet month a callback the same afternoon still wins most sales callers back, which is why the loss column is only 40%. Even so, sales calls are 95% of the month's loss.

The month the power goes out

Missed call Missed Value used Becomes your job if answered Lost even after callback Revenue lost
Sales inquiry after the outage 44 $5,156 30% 60% $40,835.52
Service call during the outage 60 $274 90% 50% $7,398.00
Maintenance, new customer 2 $274 60% 30% $98.64
Maintenance, existing owner 4 $0 today $0
Total 110 $48,332.16

That is $439.38 per missed call, and 10.6 times the normal month. The callback loss on sales rises to 60% because every dealer in the county is getting the same calls in the same week, and the homeowner books site visits with whoever offers one first. A missed sales call is now worth $928.08.

Why the loud calls are not the expensive ones

Sixty of the 110 missed calls are owners whose unit did not start, and they feel like the emergency because they are. But at $274 a visit, they add up to $7,398, about 15% of the month. The 44 missed sales calls, which arrive calmly over the next three weeks, add up to $40,835.52, about 84%.

That does not mean the service calls are cheap to miss. They cost something the table does not show. HomeAdvisor puts standby generator maintenance at $600 a year on average. In our example 27 owners (60 × 90% × 50%) end up with another dealer's tech in their yard during the outage. If one in five of them moves their annual service too, that is about five owners and $3,000 a year that keeps leaving long after the outage. And an owner who could not reach you on the worst night is not who you want answering when a neighbor asks who installed their generator.

If you mostly sell whole-home units

HomeAdvisor's $5,156 average includes small units. A 20 to 24 kW generator, the size it lists for 3,000 to 5,000 square foot homes, is $5,000 to $6,500 for the unit, and it puts installation labor at $1,500 to $5,000. That is $6,500 to $11,500 before the pad and permits, so take $9,000. On that ticket a missed post-outage sales call is worth $1,620, and the 44 of them come to $71,280.

How sure are these numbers?

The install and service prices are HomeAdvisor's. Everything else is an assumption, and the 30% win chance carries the most weight. Cut it to 15% and the outage month still loses $27,914.40. These are revenue figures, before the unit, wire, pad and labor, so your margin on them is much smaller. And the missed rates are the guess most worth checking: pull your call log from the last outage and count.

Same idea, a different trade

HVAC has the same shape with a different trigger. In our HVAC missed-call math the July no-cool call carries most of the loss, but in April the single biggest row is a replacement quote from a homeowner who is collecting bids. A generator dealer's sales caller is that shopper every month, and an outage makes them call all at once. If you do general electrical work too, our electrician answering service comparison covers the outage calls from that side.

What it costs to answer a generator dealer's phone

Local Call AI has three plans. Standard is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Each minute past the plan is $0.35, and English and Spanish are on every plan. Sales calls take about 4 minutes because of the qualifying questions (fuel at the house, what they want powered, home size), service calls about 3, and maintenance about 2.5. The AI books the site visit; it never sizes a unit, quotes a price, promises an install date or tells an owner to reset a generator.

What you forward Minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every call, normal month (150) 490 $381.00 $497.00 from $750.00
Every call, outage month (430) 1,480 $727.50 $840.00 from $918.00
Only the missed calls, normal month (15) 49 $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00
Only the missed calls, outage month (110) 371 $339.35 $497.00 from $750.00

One average install, $5,156, pays for more than a year of normal-month Standard bills (12 × $381 = $4,572). Connected costs more on minutes alone at every volume in this table; you pick it because it texts the on-call tech, routes by your on-call schedule, and files new customers into Jobber or JobNimbus, the only two systems we connect to. Concierge adds an emergency live transfer and recognizes returning owners mid-call, which matters most when nearly every outage caller is an existing customer. Plan details are on the pricing page.

Count your own

Pull your call log for the month of your last big outage and the month after. Mark every unanswered call and sort a sample: service, sales, maintenance, not a job. Put your own average install and service ticket on each row. If the sales rows look like ours, the time to fix the phone is before storm season, because the calls that pay for it come right after the outage, when every dealer near you is getting them too.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a generator company?

In our worked 2026 example, a residential standby dealer loses about $4,578 to 15 missed calls in a normal 150-call month, or $305 per missed call. In a month with a regional outage it misses 110 of 430 calls and loses about $48,332, or $439 per missed call. Install and service values are from HomeAdvisor; call counts, missed rates, win chances and callback losses are assumptions to replace with your own.

Which missed call costs a generator dealer the most?

The sales inquiry. At HomeAdvisor's $5,156 average install and a 30% chance of winning a caller who is collecting three quotes, a missed sales call is worth about $619 in a normal month and $928 in the weeks after an outage. In our outage month the 44 missed sales calls are 84% of the loss, while the 60 missed service calls are 15%.

Are outage service calls worth answering if the visit is only $274?

Yes, mostly because of what comes after. HomeAdvisor puts standby generator maintenance at about $600 a year. An owner who cannot reach you during an outage may book whoever answers, and if some of them move their annual service, the loss repeats every year. In our example, one in five of 27 lost owners is about $3,000 a year.

What is a whole-home generator sales lead worth?

HomeAdvisor lists 20 to 24 kW units at $5,000 to $6,500 and installation labor at $1,500 to $5,000, so a whole-home job runs about $6,500 to $11,500 before the pad and permits. At $9,000, a 30% win chance and a 60% callback loss after an outage, a missed sales call is worth about $1,620.

How much does an answering service cost a generator dealer?

Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes and $0.35 a minute after. In our example, answering every call costs $381 in a normal month and $727.50 in an outage month on Standard, or $840 on Connected, which texts your on-call tech and files new customers into Jobber or JobNimbus. Forwarding only the calls nobody picks up costs $297 in a normal month and $339.35 in the outage month on Standard.
