How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Mold Remediation Company? (By Caller, 2026)
In short
On HomeAdvisor's 2026 mold remediation figure of $2,369, a missed call from a homeowner who already has an assessor's report costs a mold remediation company about $995. A caller who just saw mold is worth about $355, and in Texas a test-only call can't become your job at all, because state law bars one licensee from assessing and remediating the same project. Eight missed report calls a month come to about $7,960.
The number: on HomeAdvisor's 2026 figure of $2,369, a missed call from a homeowner who already has an assessor's report costs a mold remediation company about $995. A homeowner who just found a spot on the wall is worth about $355. And in Texas, the caller asking "can you test it?" can't turn into your remediation job at all. State law says one license holder can't do both on the same project.

Who's calling decides what the call is worth
A mold company's phone gets four kinds of callers, and they aren't close in value.
- The report caller. An assessor already wrote up the rooms, the square footage and the plan. They're getting bids. This is the money call.
- The "I see mold" caller. A dark patch under a sink, a musty basement. Some of these turn into real jobs. Plenty are a 10-square-foot bathroom the EPA says a homeowner can clean up themselves.
- The test-only caller. They want someone to come find out. Depending on your state, that may not be a call you can take.
- Everyone else. Existing jobs, insurance questions, people who wanted a water heater guy.
The Texas rule that changes the test call
Texas Occupations Code section 1958.155 says it plainly: "A license holder may not perform both mold assessment and mold remediation on the same project." Owning both companies on one project is out too. Remediation over 25 contiguous square feet needs a license, the assessor writes the work analysis before anyone starts, and the remediator gets a certificate back to the owner within 10 days of finishing.
So for a Texas remediator, a test-only call is worth a referral to an independent assessor and nothing more on that project. The good news is that the same homeowner often calls back with a report in hand, and that's the $995 caller. Other states set their own rules, and we only read Texas for this post. The math, caller by caller
HomeAdvisor puts most mold remediation jobs at about $2,369, in a $1,223 to $3,758 range, or $10 to $25 a square foot. Here's what a missed call costs on our assumptions.
Report caller: $2,369 × 60% chance you win the bid × 70% you don't get back on a callback = $994.98. They're collecting bids, so a callback saves some of them, but the companies that answered got to walk the house first.
"I see mold" caller: $2,369 × 50% that it's a real remediation job × 50% you win it × 60% lost after a callback = $355.35.
Where the mold is changes everything. HomeAdvisor's location table, run through the report-caller math at the middle of each range:
| Where the mold is | HomeAdvisor range | Missed report call costs |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | $500 to $1,000 | $315 |
| Basement | $500 to $3,000 | $735 |
| Attic | $1,000 to $4,000 | $1,050 |
| HVAC system | $3,000 to $10,000 | $2,730 |
| Whole house | $10,000 to $30,000 | $8,400 |
A whole-house job is worth about 27 bathrooms. That's why the phone should ask "which rooms, and about how big?" before anything else.
A normal month
Say 80 calls: 25 report callers, 25 "I see mold," 20 test-only, 10 other. You're in a crawl space half the day and you miss 8 of the report calls and 8 of the see-mold calls.
8 × $994.98 + 8 × $355.35 = $10,802.64. The report callers are 73.7% of it. The test-only calls barely move the number in Texas, which is the whole point. Your phone's job is to never miss a report caller.
How this differs from a water damage call
A burst pipe at 2 a.m. goes to the first company that answers, and our water damage restoration missed-call math shows how fast that adds up in a freeze. Mold usually moves slower. It's a bid, often with an assessor's report attached, and the homeowner is comparing. Speed still matters, but being the company that answers, asks the right questions and books the walkthrough matters more. Radon companies sort calls a similar way, around a test result, as our radon mitigation missed-call math shows.
What the phone should ask, and what it shouldn't say
Ask: Do you have an assessor's report? Which rooms? About how many square feet? Is there still water coming in? Is this for a sale or an insurance claim? Then book the walkthrough in the slots you set, or route a test-only caller the way your script says. On our plans the AI never tells a caller what kind of mold they have, never says a house is safe or unsafe, and doesn't give legal advice about your state's licensing rules. Our water damage restoration answering service comparison covers the after-hours side of the same phone.
What it costs to answer
Our plans: Standard is $297 a month with 250 call minutes. Connected is $497 with 500. Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Past your plan it's $0.35 a minute, and English and Spanish come on every plan. The 80-call month above runs about 280 minutes at 3.5 minutes a call, so $307.50 on Standard. One saved report call covers about three months of that. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only, and the full plan list is on the pricing page.
