How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Pest Control Company? (2026 Math on Recurring Plans)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

In a worked example for a four-tech pest control company taking 400 calls in May, the 77 it misses cost about $10,408 in revenue, or $147 per missed call from a real customer and $209 per missed new-customer call. The biggest single row is the homeowner shopping for a quarterly plan: priced as one $200 visit those 18 calls look like $1,080, but priced as the first year of the plan they are $4,320, 42% of the month's loss.

In short: in a worked example for a four-tech pest control company taking 400 calls in May, the 77 calls it misses cost about $10,408 in revenue. That is $147 per missed call from a real customer, and $209 per missed call from a new one. Most of the gap between pest control and the trades that charge per job comes from one call: the homeowner asking about a quarterly plan. Priced as a single $200 visit, those calls look small. Priced as the first year of the plan they start, they are 42% of the month's loss.

A note on who is doing the math: I'm Justin McKelvey, and Local Call AI, the AI receptionist for contractors, is my company. The plan prices near the bottom are ours. Everything above them works the same whoever answers your phone.

Most missed-call math for contractors multiplies missed calls by an average ticket. For a plumber or a roofer that is roughly right, because the call is for one job. For a pest company it undercounts the call that matters most. HomeAdvisor's 2026 data puts a quarterly visit at $100 to $300, so the plan inquiry looks like a $200 call. It is really a $800 first year, and more if the customer renews.

How many calls does a pest control company miss in May?

Spring is when the phone rings most and techs are out longest, so we model May. Say 400 calls: 300 during business hours and 100 in the evening or on a weekend. For business hours we use CallRail's January 2025 finding, from 1.1 million leads, that home-service businesses miss 14% of calls. For evenings and weekends we assume 35%, since the office is closed and a tech is the backup. Those rates and the split are planning assumptions; your phone carrier's report will give you the real ones.

That is 42 missed business-hours calls and 35 missed after-hours calls, 77 in all. Six are sales pitches or wrong numbers. Twenty-five are your existing customers. The other 46 are people who might have become customers.

What a missed call from a new customer is worth

Values are midpoints of HomeAdvisor's 2026 pest control ranges, read October 16, 2026: quarterly service $100 to $300 per visit, a one-time treatment $300 to $550, bees $150 to $500, mice and rats $180 to $600, mosquitos $350 to $500 per season, bed bugs $1,000 to $4,000 for a whole home. The plan row uses four quarterly visits at $200. How many calls of each kind, how often you would book them, and how many a callback loses are our assumptions.

Missed new-customer call Missed Value used Booked if answered Lost even after callback Revenue lost
Quarterly plan inquiry (ants, spiders, roaches) 18 $800 (first year) 50% 60% $4,320.00
Bees or wasps 8 $325 70% 85% $1,547.00
Bed bugs 2 $2,500 50% 50% $1,250.00
One-time treatment 8 $425 60% 60% $1,224.00
Mice and rats 6 $390 60% 60% $842.40
Mosquito season program 4 $425 (season) 50% 50% $425.00
Total 46 $9,608.40

Each row is missed calls × value × chance you would have booked it × share a callback does not recover. Bees or wasps: 8 × $325 × 70% × 85% = $1,547. That row loses the most to a slow callback because a nest by the front door is a today problem. CallRail's September 2025 survey of 1,000 consumers found 82% say they'll call a competitor when a business doesn't answer, and only 42% leave a voicemail. A homeowner with wasps does not wait for the voicemail to be heard.

Spread over 46 new callers, that is $209 per missed new-customer call.

Why the quarterly plan call is worth more than it looks

Put the plan inquiry in at one visit and the row falls from $4,320 to $1,080, and the month's loss falls to $7,168. That $3,240 gap is the reason a pest company should price missed calls differently from other trades. The plan buyer is not buying a visit. They are buying four, and the shopper who reached your competitor's receptionist instead is now on someone else's route for the year.

Go one step further. If a plan customer stays an average of three years (an assumption; check your own retention), the same 18 calls are worth $12,960 and the month's loss is about $19,048. We keep the first-year figure in the headline because it holds up without a guess about renewals. It is also why a missed plan inquiry in spring costs more than one in winter: spring is when the first ants and wasps show up and homeowners start shopping for a plan, so the call you miss in April is more likely to be one.

The missed call from a customer you already have

A third of the missed calls in this example are existing customers: moving a quarterly visit, asking for a re-treat because the ants came back, or asking about a bill. These callers will usually wait for a callback, so they are not lost sales. They are a churn risk. Assume 4% of customers whose call goes unanswered cancel at their next renewal instead of staying: 25 × $800 × 4% = $800 a month, or $32 per call. It is the smallest number on the page and the hardest to see, because the customer who leaves never says the unanswered call was why.

Add it to the new-customer table and the month is $10,408.40 across 71 real callers, $147 each.

How much of this rests on our guesses?

The booking chances do most of the work. Halve every one and the month still loses about $5,204. These are revenue figures, before chemicals, fuel and tech time, so set them against your margin, not your bank account. We also left out commercial accounts, termite work and the referral a happy plan customer sends you, because each is easy to overstate.

For contrast, our locksmith version of this math lands at $183 per real call, almost all of it from lockouts at night. A pest company's loss is spread across the day, and the biggest piece is a call that sounds routine. Our missed-call cost research has the figures for the other trades.

What it costs to answer a pest company's phone in May

Local Call AI's published plans: Standard $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected $497 with 500, Concierge from $750 with 1,000. Minutes past the plan are $0.35 each, and every plan answers in English and Spanish. A pest call (what are you seeing, where, how long, here is the next opening) runs about 3 minutes.

What you forward Calls, minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every May call 400 calls, 1,200 min $629.50 $742.00 from $820.00
Evenings and weekends only 100 calls, 300 min $314.50 $497.00 from $750.00
Only calls nobody picks up 77 calls, 231 min $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00

Covering evenings and weekends costs $314.50 that month, and a single plan customer booked from one of those calls is $800 of first-year revenue. The bigger plans are about routing, not minutes: Connected texts the call to whoever is on call, which matters for the wasp nest, and Concierge can live-transfer an emergency and recognize a returning customer mid-call. Our pest control answering service comparison lines up the other services, including cheaper AI tiers for a solo exterminator, and plan details are on our pricing page.

Find your own number

Pull last May's missed calls from your phone carrier. Split them into existing customers and new callers, then split the new callers into plan inquiries and one-off jobs. Price the plan inquiries at a year of your own quarterly rate, not one visit, and the one-off jobs at your own tickets. If the plan row is your biggest, the fix is answering in spring, not more office staff in winter. The pest control answering service page walks through what the AI asks on each kind of call.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a pest control company?

In our worked 2026 example, a four-tech pest company missing 77 of 400 calls in May loses about $10,408 in revenue, or $147 per missed call from a real customer and $209 per missed new-customer call. Values are midpoints of HomeAdvisor's 2026 pest control ranges; the call mix and booking rates are assumptions to replace with your own.

Why is a missed quarterly plan call worth more than one visit?

Because the caller is buying a year of service. At HomeAdvisor's $200 quarterly midpoint, a plan is $800 in its first year. In our example the 18 missed plan inquiries are $1,080 priced as single visits and $4,320 priced as first-year plans, 42% of the month's loss.

Does a missed call from an existing pest control customer cost anything?

Not a sale, usually, because existing customers wait for a callback. The cost is churn. If 4% of customers whose call goes unanswered cancel at renewal, 25 missed existing-customer calls cost about $800 a month in our example.

Which missed pest control call hurts most?

By total, the quarterly plan inquiry ($4,320 in our May example). By urgency, bees or wasps: we assume a callback loses 85% of them, because a nest by the door is a same-day problem and 82% of consumers in CallRail's September 2025 survey say they'll call a competitor.

What does an answering service cost a pest control company?

Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 minutes and $0.35 a minute after. At 3 minutes a call, forwarding only evening and weekend calls costs $314.50 in our 100-call May example, and answering all 400 May calls costs $629.50. Connected ($497, 500 minutes) adds instant text alerts to the on-call tech.
