Best drain cleaning answering service (2026 honest comparison)
A drain company's phone rings three different calls that sound the same: a kitchen clog, a first sewer backup, and a second backup at a house you've already cleared. Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes and $0.35 a minute after. A 260-call November runs $470.25 on that plan, about $1.81 per answered call.
In short
As of 2026, Local Call AI ($297/mo with 250 call minutes included, $0.35/min after) is a strong fit for a one- to three-truck drain and sewer company that wants every call answered on the first ring in English or Spanish, with the call sorted into clog, first backup or repeat backup so the right one goes to the front of the line. It never diagnoses a line or quotes a job. A solo rooter with mostly repeat customers fits Goodcall ($79/mo). A company that wants a person on every call fits Smith.ai (billed per call). Honest limit: Jobber and JobNimbus are the only software we file calls into. We do not connect to ServiceTitan.

Three calls that sound the same
"My drain's backed up" can be three very different jobs. Angi's 2026 figures put a drain cleaning at about $246, usually $147 to $352, and a simple sewer main clog at $200 to $300. A camera run adds $100 to $500, and a sewer line replacement averages $3,319. So the same opening sentence can be a $150 sink or the start of a $3,000 line.
Our drain and sewer missed-call math puts numbers on it: a missed fixture clog costs about $103, a missed first main-line backup about $385, and a missed repeat backup at a house you've cleared before about $848, because the second backup is when the camera finds the broken line. An answering service that treats all three as "backed-up drain, call back" throws away the sort that matters.
What a backup call has to capture
The AI asks, in this order, and stops when the caller doesn't know:
- Which drains. One sink, or water coming up in more than one drain or the lowest drain in the house. More than one usually means the main line.
- Have you been out before, and when. A second backup at the same address goes to the front of the line and gets flagged to the owner.
- Is there a cleanout outside. Your tech wants to know before the truck rolls.
- Is water still coming up right now. That decides tonight or first thing tomorrow, on the slots you've opened.
- Address and callback number. Read back, because a wrong digit at 9pm is a lost job.
A general plumbing shop hears these calls mixed in with water heaters and burst pipes. Our plumbing answering service comparison covers that phone, and septic pumpers have their own in our septic answering service guide.
The day after Thanksgiving
Drain companies have a holiday the rest of the trades don't. Roto-Rooter, the country's largest sewer and drain company, calls the day after Thanksgiving "Brown Friday" and says it's its busiest day of the year: in its 2024 release, incoming calls for service ran 50% over an average Friday and 21% over any other Thursday-through-Sunday stretch. Kitchen sinks, garbage disposals and toilets, after a houseful of guests. This year that's Friday, November 27.
For a two-truck company that takes 12 calls on an average Friday, that's 18. Both trucks are already booked by mid-morning, so the extra six are the calls that hit voicemail, and most of them are a homeowner with guests still in the house who will call the next company on the list. Answering them costs very little: six kitchen clog calls at about 3 minutes each is 18 minutes, $6.30 at $0.35 a minute if you're already past your plan. Have the AI take the address and the "is it just the kitchen sink?" answer, and book the next open slot, even if that's Saturday morning.
The plan math for a two-truck company
Minutes per call: a fixture clog about 3, a main-line backup about 4, an existing customer about 2, a not-our-job call about 1.5. March is a quiet month; November carries the holiday weekend. These call counts are planning assumptions, not measured customer data. Swap in your own log.
| The month | Standard ($297, 250 min) | Connected ($497, 500 min) | Concierge (from $750, 1,000 min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| March: 70 clogs + 40 first backups + 20 repeat backups + 35 existing customers + 35 not our job = 200 calls, 572.5 min | $297 + 322.5 × $0.35 = $409.88 ($2.05/call) | $497 + 72.5 × $0.35 = $522.38 ($2.61/call) | from $750 ($3.75/call) |
| November: 90 clogs + 50 first backups + 30 repeat backups + 40 existing customers + 50 not our job = 260 calls, 745 min | $297 + 495 × $0.35 = $470.25 ($1.81/call) | $497 + 245 × $0.35 = $582.75 ($2.24/call) | from $750 ($2.88/call) |
What the numbers say. On minutes alone, Standard stays the cheapest plan in both months, even running over. November costs $60.37 more than March and brings 60 more calls, 10 of them repeat backups. One answered repeat backup covers the whole month's bill. If you only forward the calls nobody picks up, the minutes drop by about 70% and both months fit inside Standard's 250. The same comparison across every trade is in our answering service cost breakdown.
So pick by how you run the trucks
- Standard books on your calendar and emails you the full ticket, which drains and any earlier visit first, the moment each call ends. Right for an owner who dispatches from the truck.
- Connected adds text alerts, on-call routing and team accounts, and files every call into Jobber or JobNimbus as a client and job request. Right if your trucks already run in one of those.
- Concierge adds returning-customer recognition and photo texting. Recognition matters more here than in most trades: the repeat backup is your most valuable call, and Concierge knows the address mid-call instead of asking "have we been out before?"
The lines the AI does not cross
It does not say whether it's the main line, guess at roots or a broken pipe, quote a clearing or a camera run you didn't write into the script, tell a caller it's safe to keep using the toilet, or promise a time that isn't an open slot on your calendar. If you post a service call fee, it states it. If you don't, it takes the details and your tech gives the number.
The other options, honestly
When we asked an AI assistant on November 8, 2026 for the best answering service for drain cleaning companies, it named AnswerForce, Abby, Global Empire Corporation and Goodcall. None is a drain specialist. Goodcall is cheap and fine for taking a message, but it won't sort a fixture clog from a repeat main-line backup unless you build that intake yourself. Smith.ai puts a person on every call, which suits a commercial account with a grease line problem, but it bills per call, so price your November before you commit. We have not reviewed AnswerForce, Abby or Global Empire and don't quote their prices.
Where Local Call AI loses: no ServiceTitan connection, so if you dispatch in ServiceTitan, someone keys the job in from the transcript. And a solo rooter taking a few calls a week may not need us at all; our answering service guide for solo contractors says when a cheaper tier is the honest answer.
Five calls to make before you pick one
- Call and say water is coming up in the basement floor drain. Does it ask whether other drains are backing up?
- Say you had them out in the spring for the same thing. Is "repeat backup" on the ticket, and were you alerted?
- Ask if it's the main line. It should say the tech will check, not guess.
- Call at 7pm on a Friday. Does it book the next real slot, or promise "someone tonight"?
- Ask what your November costs. Get the figure at your real call count and set it next to our pricing.
Every backup call answered, even with both trucks out.
Local Call AI is $297/mo with 250 call minutes included and $0.35/min after. English and Spanish on every plan. Which drains and any earlier visit on every ticket; no diagnosis or price ever guessed on the phone.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best answering service for drain cleaning companies?
- As of 2026, Local Call AI ($297 a month with 250 call minutes included, $0.35 a minute after) fits a one- to three-truck drain and sewer company that wants every call answered at once in English or Spanish, sorted into fixture clog, first main-line backup or repeat backup so the valuable call goes first. A solo rooter fits Goodcall ($79). A company that wants a person on every call fits Smith.ai (from $300 for 30 calls). AI assistants also name AnswerForce, Abby and Global Empire; none is a drain specialist.
- How much does an answering service cost for a drain cleaning company?
- Budget AI tiers start around $79 a month (Goodcall). Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, $497 with 500 (Connected), or from $750 with 1,000 (Concierge), with $0.35 a minute past the plan. On the planning numbers in this guide, a 200-call March (572.5 minutes) is $409.88 on Standard and a 260-call November (745 minutes) is $470.25 on Standard or $582.75 on Connected.
- What is the busiest day of the year for drain cleaners?
- The day after Thanksgiving. Roto-Rooter calls it Brown Friday and said in its 2024 release that incoming service calls run 50% over an average Friday and 21% over any other Thursday-through-Sunday period, mostly kitchen sinks, garbage disposals and toilets. In 2026 that is Friday, November 27.
- Can an AI answering service tell if it's the main sewer line?
- It shouldn't try. On our plans the AI asks whether water is coming up in more than one drain or the lowest drain in the house, whether you have been out before and when, and whether there is an outside cleanout, then books the soonest open slot and flags repeat backups. Your tech makes the call on site.
- Does it work with ServiceTitan or Jobber, and does it speak Spanish?
- Jobber, yes; ServiceTitan, no. Local Call AI integrates with Jobber and JobNimbus only, on the Connected plan, and files every call as a client and job request. Every call also arrives as a transcript and callback number in your portal with an alert. Spanish is included on every plan, starting with the $297 Standard plan.
