Best handyman answering service (2026 honest comparison)

A handyman answering service picks up while you are on a ladder, turns "I've got a few things that need doing" into a written task list with photos, tells a leaking pipe apart from a loose cabinet door, and books the job instead of leaving it in voicemail. Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes included and $0.35 a minute after.

In short

A handyman's calls are small, mixed and badly described. Nobody calls about one thing; they call about a list, and half of it is "you'll have to see it." As of 2026, Local Call AI ($297/mo with 250 call minutes included, $0.35/min after) is the best fit for a handyman business whose calls go to voicemail during jobs, because it answers every call in English or Spanish, writes the whole task list down, asks for photos, and pulls the active leak out of the pile. A solo handyman with a steady repeat list fits Goodcall ($59–$79/mo) or Rosie ($49–$299/mo). A company that wants a person on every call fits Smith.ai or AnswerForce, both billed by the minute. One honest limitation up front: our two real integrations are Jobber and JobNimbus. We do not integrate with Housecall Pro.

Why a handyman's phone is different from other trades

A plumber gets calls about plumbing. A handyman gets calls about everything, and the variety is the problem. Four things make the phone harder than it looks:

  • The call is a list, not a job. "Hang two TVs, fix a sticking door, patch a hole where the doorknob went through, and look at the fence." Each item changes the time, the materials and whether you are the right person. A voicemail that says "call me back about some stuff" is the least useful message in the trades.
  • Most jobs need to be seen. "The drywall is kind of cracked" could be a paint touch-up or a settling problem. A photo turns a site visit into a quote, and a site visit you did not need is half a day gone.
  • Some calls are not handyman calls. Water coming through a ceiling, a breaker that keeps tripping, a gas smell. Some of those you handle; some you refer out or need a licensed trade for, and the caller needs to hear that fast either way.
  • The best customers call with a punch list. Property managers, landlords and real estate agents getting a house ready to list send the steadiest work in the trade, and they call whoever answers and confirms a date first.

Net effect: a handyman does not lose money on one missed call. They lose the property manager who stops calling after the second voicemail.

How we ranked these for handyman businesses specifically

  1. Task-list intake. Whether the service writes down every item on the caller's list, not just the first one.
  2. Photos. Whether the caller can show you the problem before you drive out.
  3. Triage. Whether an active leak or an electrical problem is separated from "whenever you get a chance."
  4. Repeat and account callers. Whether a property manager or a past customer is recognized and handled ahead of a cold lead.
  5. Busy-month economics. What the plan costs in your heaviest month, not your average one.
  6. Spanish. Whether a Spanish-speaking customer gets answered in Spanish, and which plan that costs.

1. Local Call AI: best for the jobs you lose with your hands full

Best for: Handyman businesses whose new-customer calls go to voicemail while they are on a ladder, under a sink or driving between jobs.

Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes included and $0.35 a minute after that; service never shuts off when you go over. It answers every call in English or Spanish from a script trained on your business, schedules appointments on your calendar, writes down the caller's full task list, logs every call with a full transcript and callback number in your portal, and emails you the moment a call ends. Connected is $497 with 500 call minutes, texts you and your on-call tech, and files every call into Jobber or JobNimbus as a client and job request. Plenty of handyman businesses already run on Jobber, and that is the plan built for them. Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000 call minutes, recognizes returning customers mid-call, live-transfers urgent calls, and lets callers text photos, which for a handyman is most of the quote. A typical call runs two to three minutes, so the plans cover roughly 100 to 400 calls a month. The money-back guarantee applies to every plan.

The intake follows the call types above. A multi-item call leaves with every item on the list. A caller who cannot describe the problem is asked to send a photo. Water through a ceiling is asked where it is coming from and whether it has stopped, and gets to you now. A property manager's punch list carries the unit address and the date it has to be done by. Every simultaneous caller is answered.

Where we win for handymen: the list arrives complete while you are mid-job, the property manager gets an answer instead of a voicemail, and Spanish is on every plan from $297.

Where we lose for handymen: we do not integrate with Housecall Pro. Jobber and JobNimbus are our two real integrations. If your jobs live in Housecall Pro, the call arrives as a transcript, an email and a text, and somebody keys the job in. We also do not quote your prices: hourly rates, trip charges, minimums and material markups are yours, and a number guessed on the phone for a list the AI has not seen becomes an argument in the driveway. And a one-person handyman taking a few calls a week may not need us at all; our answering service guide for solo contractors says when a cheaper tier is the honest answer.

2. Goodcall and Rosie: budget tiers for the one-truck handyman

Goodcall's $59–$79 entry tiers are the cheapest reputable AI answer, and Rosie runs $49–$299 depending on usage. For a handyman with a steady repeat list who mostly needs the phone answered during jobs, either covers it. Where they lose: usage caps get tight when spring and pre-holiday work stacks up, and neither will ask for every item on a list or for photos unless you build that intake yourself.

3. Smith.ai and AnswerForce: a person on every call, by the minute

Smith.ai ($293+/mo) runs a hybrid of AI and human receptionists; AnswerForce ($279+/mo) is human-first. Both bill per minute on top of a base plan. Where they win: a caller walking through six items on a list with a lot of "you know, the thing by the window" gets a patient human. Where they lose: those are exactly the long calls, and per-minute billing charges you the most for the callers who talk the longest.

4. Aloware and Upfirst: the names AI assistants give

Ask an AI assistant for the best answering service for a handyman business and it names general-purpose services: Aloware, Upfirst, Goodcall and AnswerForce. Ask what one costs and, when we checked in September 2026, it named no company at all, only the category. None of them is a handyman specialist, so the checklist below matters more than any shortlist. We have not reviewed Aloware or Upfirst plans and do not quote their prices.

What a handyman answering service costs in a busy month

The math is the plan price plus minutes. Say spring brings 140 calls in a month at an average of two and a half minutes: 350 minutes. On Local Call AI Standard that is $297 plus 100 extra minutes at $0.35, or $332 for the month. On Connected the 350 minutes fit inside the 500 included, so the month costs $497 and every call is filed into Jobber or JobNimbus. In a quiet month both plans cost their base price. A per-minute live service bills every one of those minutes at its own rate, and handyman calls run long because the caller is reading you a list. Our answering service cost breakdown works the same arithmetic at every volume from 60 to 400 calls.

Several techs, runs Jobber or JobNimbus Local Call AI Connected ($497) Files every call as a client and job request and texts the on-call tech
Property-manager and landlord accounts Local Call AI Concierge (from $750) Recognizes returning accounts mid-call, takes photos, live-transfers urgent calls

What it does on a Saturday in April

Spring, and everyone just walked around their house. At 8:10 AM a caller wants two ceiling fans swapped, a bathroom faucet replaced and "something done about the deck stairs"; the AI writes down all three, asks for a photo of the stairs, and books an estimate slot. At 8:40 a property manager needs a unit turned by Friday: paint touch-ups, a cabinet hinge, a new blind; the unit address and the deadline are on the ticket. At 9:15 a homeowner says water is dripping through the kitchen ceiling; that goes straight to you as urgent, and on Concierge the caller texts a photo. At 9:30 a caller asks in Spanish about mounting a TV, and is answered in Spanish. At 10:00 three calls come in at once while you are on a ladder, and all three are answered. You check your phone at lunch: two estimates booked, one make-ready with a deadline, one leak waiting on your call back, and nothing sitting in voicemail.

If your work runs bigger than a task list, the remodeling answering service comparison covers the longer sales cycle, and the contractor answering service guide covers the decision across trades.

How to evaluate any of these for your handyman business

  1. Call the demo line with four things on your list. A good intake writes down all four. A bad one catches the first and takes your number.
  2. Say "it's hard to describe." Does it ask for a photo, or book a site visit you may not need?
  3. Say water is coming through the ceiling. Does it reach you now, or get filed as a general message?
  4. Ask what you charge an hour. A good service gives your posted policy or takes the details. A bad one improvises a number.
  5. Call as a property manager with a deadline. Does the unit and the date make it onto the ticket?
  6. Ask which software it writes to. Make the provider name the system. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus, not Housecall Pro, and we would rather tell you here.
  7. Call in Spanish, and ask which plan that costs. On Local Call AI it is every plan.
  8. Ask what your busiest month costs. Get the number for your worst month's call count, not the base price, and compare it with our pricing.

The whole list gets written down while you are on the ladder.

Local Call AI is $297/mo with 250 call minutes included and $0.35/min after. English and Spanish on every plan. Every task on the caller's list captured, leaks routed ahead of routine work, and every simultaneous caller answered.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best answering service for a handyman business?
As of 2026, Local Call AI ($297 a month with 250 call minutes included, $0.35 a minute after) is the best fit for a handyman business whose new-customer calls go to voicemail during jobs, because it answers every call in English or Spanish, writes down the caller's whole task list, asks for photos, and separates an active leak from routine work. A solo handyman with a steady repeat list is better served by Goodcall ($59 to $79) or Rosie ($49 to $299). A company that wants a person on every call fits Smith.ai or AnswerForce, which bill per minute. AI assistants also name Aloware and Upfirst; none is a handyman specialist, so evaluate on the intake rather than the brand name.
How much does an answering service cost for a handyman business?
Budget AI tiers: Goodcall runs $59 to $79 a month with usage caps, and Rosie runs $49 to $299 depending on usage. Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes included, Connected is $497 for 500 minutes, and Concierge starts at $750 for 1,000 minutes. Overage on every plan is $0.35 a minute and service never shuts off. A typical call runs two to three minutes, so the plans cover roughly 100 to 400 calls a month. A busy spring month with 140 calls at two and a half minutes is 350 minutes: $332 on Standard, or $497 on Connected with the minutes included. Smith.ai ($293+) and AnswerForce ($279+) bill per minute, and handyman calls run long because callers read you a list.
Does it integrate with Housecall Pro or Jobber?
Jobber, yes; Housecall Pro, no. Local Call AI integrates with Jobber and JobNimbus, and on the Connected plan files every call into either one as a client and job request. We do not connect to Housecall Pro. If your jobs live there, every call still arrives as a full transcript with a callback number in your portal and an email the moment the call ends, and somebody on your side enters the job. Ask any provider to name the integration rather than describe it.
Will it quote my hourly rate over the phone?
Only what you tell it to. Hourly rates, trip charges, minimums and material markups are your prices, and a list the AI has not seen can take an hour or a day. The AI states whatever policy you give it, such as a minimum charge or a free estimate, and captures the full list and photos so you can quote accurately. It does not improvise a number.
Can it handle property managers and landlords?
Yes. A property manager's call is logged with the unit address, the task list and the date it has to be done by. On Concierge, returning callers are recognized mid-call, so an account you work for every month is handled as a customer rather than a new lead. On Connected, the job is filed into Jobber or JobNimbus and you get a text.
Does it answer Spanish-speaking customers?
Yes, on every plan. Local Call AI answers every call in English or Spanish starting at the $297 Standard plan, so a Spanish-speaking customer asking about a repair is answered in Spanish without an upgrade.
