How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Drain and Sewer Company? (The Repeat Backup Is the $848 Call, 2026)
In short
On Angi's 2026 prices, a missed sink or toilet clog costs a drain and sewer company about $103, a first main-line backup about $385, and a repeat backup from a house you've cleared before about $848. The repeat caller usually gets logged as an existing customer and priced at zero, but the second backup is when the camera finds a broken line, and Angi puts sewer line replacement at $3,319. In a 260-call month with 78 missed, 9 repeat backups carry 47% of a $16,197 loss.
In short: a drain company's cheapest-looking call is its most expensive one. A house that backs up into the basement a second time is calling about a main line you've already cleared, and that's when the camera finds roots or a broken pipe. Angi puts sewer line replacement at $3,319 on average. On Angi's 2026 prices, a missed repeat backup costs about $848, against $385 for a first backup and $103 for a sink clog. In a 260-call month with 78 missed, a two-truck company loses about $16,197, and the 9 repeat backups carry 47% of it.

The tickets: $246, $250 and $3,319
Angi's 2026 figures:
- Drain cleaning averages about $246, usually $147 to $352. A simple sewer main clog runs $200 to $300, and main line work in general $100 to $800.
- A video inspection costs $100 to $500, and Angi says most sewer line projects need one.
- Sewer line replacement averages $3,319, often $225 to $10,000, at $50 to $250 a linear foot.
So a main-line call is three possible sales: the $250 clearing, a camera run, and sometimes the line itself.
Why the second backup is worth more than the first
On a first main-line backup, the tech clears it and may or may not run the camera. We assume a camera on half of them at $300, and a broken line found on 10% that the homeowner replaces with you half the time. That's $166 of replacement value riding on each first backup.
A second backup at the same house is a different call. The line has already failed once, so the tech runs the camera every time, and we assume 40% show a broken or root-filled line that the homeowner replaces with you 60% of the time, because you've been there before. That's $796.56 of replacement value on one call, and the whole call is worth $1,346.56 before booking. When that replacement gets trenched, you're the contractor calling an excavator for a dig date, and in our excavation contractor missed-call math that call is the excavator's costliest one to miss, about $788.
Here's the catch: the caller still has sewage on the floor. They'll wait a little longer for the company that came last time, so we assume a callback saves 30%, against 15% on a first backup. It still loses most of them.
| Missed call | Worth when answered | Callback recovers | Lost per missed call | Missed | Lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat main-line backup | $1,211.90 | 30% | $848.33 | 9 | $7,635.00 |
| First main-line backup | $452.76 | 15% | $384.85 | 15 | $5,772.69 |
| Sink, tub or toilet clog | $172.20 | 40% | $103.32 | 27 | $2,789.64 |
| Existing customer, scheduling or billing | 12 | $0.00 | |||
| Not a job | 15 | $0.00 | |||
| Total | 78 | $16,197.33 |
The month: 260 calls, of which 90 are fixture clogs, 50 are first main-line backups, 30 are repeat backups, 40 are other existing-customer calls and 50 aren't jobs. Both techs are on jobs, so 30% go to voicemail. That's $317.59 per missed call from a real customer, and main-line calls, first and repeat, carry 83% of it.
A general plumbing shop sees the same calls mixed in with water heaters and burst pipes. Our plumber missed-call math prices that phone, where the no-hot-water call is the big row.
Stop counting repeat callers as "existing customers"
Most missed-call math, ours included, puts existing customers in a $0 row because they usually call back. For a drain company that hides the most valuable call on the board. The fix is a question, not software: when a backup call comes in, ask whether you've cleared that line before and when. A second backup within a year or two goes to the front of the line and gets the camera.
What the phone should and shouldn't do on a backup call
The caller wants to know what it'll cost and whether it's the main line. On our plans the AI doesn't diagnose the line or quote a job. It asks whether water is coming up in more than one drain or the lowest drain in the house, whether you've been out before and when, and whether there's a cleanout outside. Then it books the soonest slot and flags repeat backups to the owner. Our plumbing answering service comparison walks through how AI and live services handle after-hours backups.
What it costs to answer a drain company's phone
Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Every plan bills $0.35 a minute past its allowance and answers in English and Spanish. Planning call lengths: clogs 3 minutes, main-line backups 4, existing customers 2, not-a-job 1.5.
| What you forward | Minutes | Standard ($297) | Connected ($497) | Concierge (from $750) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Every call (260) | 745 | $470.25 | $582.75 | from $750.00 |
| Only the calls nobody picks up (78) | 223.5 | $297.00 | $497.00 | from $750.00 |
One saved repeat backup covers Standard for the month almost three times. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. Plan details are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a missed call cost a drain and sewer company?
On Angi's 2026 prices and our assumptions, about $848 for a missed repeat main-line backup, $385 for a first backup and $103 for a sink, tub or toilet clog. In a 260-call month with 78 missed, a two-truck company loses about $16,197, or $318 per missed call from a real customer.
Why is a repeat sewer backup worth more than a first one?
Because a line that backs up twice is often broken or full of roots, and the second visit is when the camera shows it. We assume 40% of repeat backups find a line that needs replacing, against 10% of first backups, at Angi's $3,319 average replacement.
Do callbacks work for sewer backup calls?
Not often. Sewage on the floor gets the first company that answers. We assume a callback saves 15% of first backups and 30% of repeat backups, where the homeowner would rather wait for the company that came last time.
What is a sewer line replacement lead worth?
Angi's 2026 average replacement is $3,319, often $225 to $10,000. In our math a first main-line backup carries about $166 of replacement value and a repeat backup about $797.
What does an answering service cost a drain cleaning company?
On Local Call AI, our 260-call example month is 745 minutes: $470.25 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute) or $582.75 on Connected. Forwarding only the 78 calls nobody picks up is about 224 minutes, inside Standard's 250, so $297.
