How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Plumber? (2026 Math by Call Type)
In short
In a worked example for a three-truck plumbing shop taking 300 calls a month, the 42 calls it misses cost about $13,172 a month in revenue, or $366 for every missed call from a real customer. That sits at the low end of the $350 to $1,200 range in our 2026 research. The surprise is where the money goes: the no-hot-water call, not the burst pipe, carries about half of it, because a water heater job is worth ten times a drain clog and the caller is shopping.

Written by Justin McKelvey, founder of Local Call AI. Local Call AI is our own product, an AI answering service for contractors, and it shows up near the end of this post with its prices. The math works the same whoever answers your phone.
Most "cost of a missed call" figures treat every call as the same call. A plumber's phone is not like that. A slab-leak panic, a slow kitchen drain and a "what would it cost to repipe" are three different amounts of money with three different odds of calling you back. So this post prices them one at a time.
How many calls does a plumbing shop actually miss?
CallRail's January 2025 analysis of 1.1 million leads put the missed-call rate for home services at 14%. Apply that to a shop taking 300 inbound calls a month and you get 42 missed calls.
Voicemail catches less of that than owners think. In CallRail's September 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, only 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business doesn't answer, and 82% said they'll call a competitor. On 42 missed calls, that is roughly 24 callers who leave nothing at all. You never learn what those were.
What each missed plumbing call is worth, by type
The ticket values come from our research page: a plumbing service call runs $200 to $400 and a larger job (water heater, repipe) $3,000 to $8,000. The call mix, booking chances and callback rates below are planning assumptions, not measured customer data. Swap in your own.
| Missed call type | Missed per month | Job value used | Booked if answered | Lost even after your callback | Revenue lost per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Burst pipe, active leak, sewer backup | 8 | $300 | 80% | 90% | $1,728 |
| No hot water, water heater out | 6 | $3,000 | 50% | 75% | $6,750 |
| Clogged drain, running toilet, routine repair | 18 | $300 | 60% | 60% | $1,944 |
| Estimate: repipe, remodel rough-in | 4 | $5,500 | 25% | 50% | $2,750 |
| Not a job (spam, vendors, wrong number) | 6 | $0 | n/a | n/a | $0 |
| Total | 42 | $13,172 |
How each row is built: missed calls × job value × chance you'd have booked it × share you don't win back on the callback. For the water heater row: 6 × $3,000 × 50% × 75% = $6,750.
Why the no-hot-water call costs more than the burst pipe
The burst pipe is the call everyone pictures, and it is the one you almost never win back. A homeowner with water on the floor dials the next plumber within minutes. But it is priced as a service call, so even losing nine in ten of them only costs $1,728 a month here.
The no-hot-water call is different. Nothing is flooding, so the caller has time to phone three companies and take the first one who answers with a price and a time. The job behind it is a water heater, priced at the bottom of the $3,000 to $8,000 range in this table. Six of those calls a month carry $6,750, about 51% of the total. If you only fix one thing, fix the phone during the hours people notice a cold shower: early morning and evening.
The estimate calls are the other quiet loss. Four a month looks like nothing, but at $5,500 a job they carry $2,750, more than all 18 routine repairs. These are the callers most likely to leave a voicemail and still hire whoever called back first.
What if our assumptions are too generous?
Every revenue figure in the table scales straight with the booking chance. Halve every booking rate and the month is still $6,586 in lost revenue. Even then, one water heater job a month is worth more than any answering plan below.
Two caveats worth saying plainly. This is revenue, not profit: compare it against your own gross margin, not your bank balance. And it ignores the repeat value of a customer who would have called you for the next ten years, which our missed-call math for contractors covers across all trades.
What answering those calls costs
Here is the other side, on Local Call AI's published plans (Standard $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected $497 with 500, Concierge from $750 with 1,000, and $0.35 a minute past the plan on every tier):
- Answer every call: 300 calls at about 2.5 minutes is 750 minutes. On Standard that is $297 + 500 × $0.35 = $472 a month. On Connected, which also files each call into Jobber or JobNimbus, it is $497 + 250 × $0.35 = $584.50.
- Answer only the calls you'd miss: many phone carriers let you forward a call only when nobody picks up. If you set it up that way, 42 calls at about 3 minutes is 126 minutes, inside Standard's 250. That is $297 a month.
Either way, one booked water heater pays for months of answering, and so does one recovered estimate. Our plumber answering service comparison lines up the other options (Rosie, Goodcall, Smith.ai, Jobber's own receptionist) on price, and the plan details are on our pricing page.
How to find your own number in two weeks
- Pull the call log from your carrier or phone app for the last 14 days. Count inbound calls and the ones nobody answered.
- Call back every missed number and write down what it was: emergency, no hot water, routine, estimate or not a job. Note whether they had already booked someone.
- Put your own ticket values next to each type, from your last three months of invoices.
- Multiply it out the same way as the table above, or plug the totals into our missed-call calculator.
Two weeks of real data beats every industry average, ours included.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a missed call cost a plumbing company?
In our worked 2026 example, a three-truck shop missing 42 of 300 monthly calls loses about $13,172 a month in revenue, or $366 per missed call from a real customer. That is at the low end of the $350 to $1,200 per-call range on our research page. Your figure depends on your call mix and ticket values.
Which missed plumbing calls cost the most?
Water heater calls. A no-hot-water caller has time to shop around, and the job behind the call is worth $3,000 or more. In the example, six missed water heater calls a month carry about half of all the lost revenue. Estimate calls for repipes and remodels come second.
Do plumbing customers leave a voicemail?
Mostly not. In CallRail's September 2025 consumer survey, only 42% of people said they leave a voicemail when a business doesn't answer, and 82% said they'll call a competitor. On an emergency call the caller usually dials the next plumber within minutes.
How many calls does a typical plumbing business miss?
CallRail's January 2025 analysis of 1.1 million leads found a 14% missed-call rate for home services. At 300 calls a month that is 42 missed calls. Your own rate may be higher or lower, so check your carrier's call log for two weeks.
Is an answering service worth it for a plumber?
If it books even one water heater job or one estimate a month that you would have lost, it pays for itself many times over. Local Call AI is $297 a month with 250 call minutes and $0.35 a minute after, which covers a shop that forwards only its missed calls. Answering all 300 calls a month runs about $472 on the same plan.
Does Local Call AI work with my plumbing software?
It files calls into Jobber and JobNimbus on the Connected plan ($497 a month, 500 minutes). Those are the only two integrations. With any other software, each call arrives as a summary, transcript and recording in your portal with an email alert, and your team enters the job. English and Spanish are included on every plan.
