How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Well Pump Company? (It Depends on the Next Truck, 2026)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

On Angi's 2026 prices, a missed no-water call costs a well pump company about $843, because it's usually a $1,897 pump or a $500 tank and a household without water calls the next name on the list. A missed replacement quote costs about $212. In a 150-call month with 53 missed, a two-truck well service loses about $15,401, and no-water calls carry 88% of it. How far away the next well contractor is moves that number more than anything else.

In short: a no-water call is the most valuable call a well service gets. On Angi's 2026 averages it's usually a $1,897 pump replacement or a $500 pressure tank, and the household with dry taps calls the next well contractor on the list. A missed no-water call costs about $843. In a 150-call month where a two-truck company misses 53 calls, the loss is about $15,401, and 88% of it is no-water calls. The number that changes it most isn't your ticket; it's how far away the next truck is. Where you're the only well service nearby, the same month loses about $9,620. In a suburban market with several competitors, about $19,255.

Who calls a well pump company

The EPA estimates that more than 23 million US households, around 15% of the population, get their drinking water from a private well. When the pump or tank fails, there's no utility to call. There's you, and whoever else services wells in the county.

Angi's 2026 figures for the two jobs most no-water calls turn into:

  • Well pump replacement averages $1,897 across 1,339 projects, most between $973 and $2,822. Wells deeper than 150 feet run $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Pressure tank replacement averages $500, most between $300 and $700.
  • Angi's pro tip: with a combination pump and tank, replacing the whole system is usually cheaper than one part. If the pump kicks on every time a tap runs, the tank is likely the problem.

We assume 6 in 10 no-water calls end in a pump and 4 in 10 in a tank, which makes the average no-water call a $1,338 job. A pump job is 3.8 times a tank job, which is why the phone can't guess which one it is.

A dry-weather month: 53 missed calls

Say a two-truck well service gets 150 calls in a month: 45 no-water or low-pressure calls from new customers, 25 planned replacement quotes (a pump that's short-cycling, a tank that's waterlogged, a pump flagged at a home sale), 40 existing customers and scheduling calls, and 40 that aren't jobs (city-water callers, people who want a new well drilled, sales pitches). Both trucks are out in the county, often somewhere without signal, so 35% of calls go to voicemail.

Missed call Worth when answered Callback recovers Lost per missed call Missed Lost
No water or low pressure $1,204 30% $843 16 $13,489
Planned replacement quote $531 60% $212 9 $1,912
Existing customer or scheduling 14 $0
Not a job 14 $0
Total 53 $15,401

That's about $616 per missed call from a real customer. We assume an answered no-water call books 90% of the time, and a quote books an estimate 70% of the time with 40% of estimates won.

The number that matters most: how far away the next truck is

The 30% callback recovery on no-water calls is our middle case, and it's the assumption to argue with. A family without water will wait for a callback only if nobody else can come sooner.

Your market Callback recovers Lost per missed no-water call 16 missed Month's loss
Only well service within an hour 60% $482 $7,708 $9,620
A few competitors (our example) 30% $843 $13,489 $15,401
Suburban, several competitors 10% $1,084 $17,343 $19,255

Same calls, same tickets, a $9,635 spread. A well service that's the only one in a rural county loses about $5,781 less on no-water calls than our example, but that cushion disappears the day a second company starts running ads there. If you're not sure which row you're in, look at last summer's no-water voicemails and check how many still booked after you called back.

A plumber's no-water call is cheaper and more crowded. Our plumber missed-call math found the no-hot-water call carries about half a three-truck shop's month.

What the phone should and shouldn't do on a well call

On our plans the AI doesn't diagnose pump versus tank, price a job, or say whether the water is safe to drink. It asks whether there's any water at all or just low pressure, whether the pump clicks on and off, how deep the well is and how old the pump is if they know, whether livestock depend on it, and how to find the wellhead. Then it books the first opening, or puts a no-water call through to the on-call tech. Rural trades share the same problem, a truck an hour from the office; our septic answering service comparison shows how a septic company handles it.

What it costs to answer a well service's phone

Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Every plan bills $0.35 a minute past its allowance and answers in English and Spanish. Planning call lengths: no-water calls and quotes 4 minutes, existing customers 2.5, not-a-job 1.5.

What you forward Minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every call (150) 440 $363.50 $497.00 from $750.00
Only the calls nobody picks up (53) 156 $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00

One answered pressure-tank call covers Standard for the month. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. Plan details are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a well pump company?

On Angi's 2026 prices and our assumptions, about $843 for a missed no-water call and $212 for a missed replacement quote. In a 150-call month with 53 missed, a two-truck well service loses about $15,401, or $616 per missed call from a real customer.

Why does competition change the cost of a missed well call?

Because a household without water calls the next well contractor if you don't answer. Where you're the only one within an hour, we assume a callback still wins back 60% of them and the month loses about $9,620. With several competitors nearby, 10%, and the month loses about $19,255.

What is a well pump job worth?

Angi's 2026 national average for a well pump replacement is $1,897, with most between $973 and $2,822, and a pressure tank replacement averages $500. Deep wells over 150 feet run $2,000 to $10,000 or more.

How many homes use private wells?

The EPA estimates more than 23 million US households, around 15% of the population or over 43 million people, rely on private wells for drinking water.

What does an answering service cost a well pump company?

On Local Call AI, our 150-call example month is about 440 minutes: $363.50 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute) or $497 on Connected. Forwarding only the 53 calls nobody picks up is about 156 minutes, inside Standard's 250, so $297.
