How Much Does a Missed Call Cost an Excavation Contractor? (Other Contractors Are the Costly Calls, 2026)
In short
On Angi's 2026 prices, a missed call from another contractor who needs a dig date costs an excavation company about $788, a missed urgent dig about $1,080, and a missed homeowner project quote only about $251, even though the homeowner job averages $3,979, because homeowners collecting quotes still take a callback. In a 120-call month with 43 missed, an owner-operator loses about $14,917, and contractor calls carry 48% of it.
In short: an excavator's phone has two kinds of customer. Homeowners call about a driveway, a pad or a drainage problem, and on Angi's 2026 average that's a $3,979 job. But they're collecting quotes, so a callback still wins most of them, and a missed homeowner call costs about $251. Other contractors call about a dig they need on a date: a plumber with a sewer line to replace, a septic installer, a pool builder. They call the next excavator on their list to hold their own schedule, so a missed contractor call costs about $788. In a 120-call month with 43 missed, an owner-operator loses about $14,917, and contractor calls carry 48% of it.

The tickets: $3,979 and $1,500
Angi's 2026 figures, from 3,439 verified projects:
- Residential excavation averages $3,979, most between $1,659 and $6,716.
- Trenching for plumbing runs $1,500 to $10,000. Pool excavation runs $400 to $1,500, and labor $120 to $150 an hour.
- December through February are the slow months.
We price every contractor dig and urgent dig at $1,500, the bottom of Angi's trenching range, so the contractor rows are the conservative ones.
Why the smaller job is the costlier missed call
A homeowner with a $3,979 project is getting three quotes. We assume you quote 70% of the calls you answer and win 30% of those, so an answered homeowner call is worth $835.59. If it goes to voicemail, they're still waiting on the other two quotes, and we assume a same-day callback saves 70% of them. The concrete contractor who pours that driveway after the grading gets the same bid-collecting caller, and in our concrete contractor missed-call math the size decides it: about $836 for a missed 24-by-36 quote against $193 for a 10-by-20.
A plumber who needs a trench dug next Tuesday for a sewer line replacement isn't shopping. Their own customer is waiting, so they book whoever confirms a date first. We assume 75% book when you answer and a callback saves only 30%. An urgent dig, a washed-out drainage swale or a line that needs exposing today, saves only 10%.
| Missed call | Worth when answered | Callback recovers | Lost per missed call | Missed | Lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contractor needs a dig date | $1,125.00 | 30% | $787.50 | 9 | $7,087.50 |
| Urgent dig | $1,200.00 | 10% | $1,080.00 | 4 | $4,320.00 |
| Homeowner project quote | $835.59 | 70% | $250.68 | 14 | $3,509.48 |
| Existing job or scheduling | 9 | $0.00 | |||
| Not a job | 7 | $0.00 | |||
| Total | 43 | $14,916.98 |
The month: 120 calls, of which 40 are homeowner quotes, 25 are other contractors, 10 are urgent, 25 are existing jobs and 20 aren't jobs (fill dirt requests, sales calls). The owner runs the machine, so 35% go to voicemail. That's $552.48 per missed call from a real customer.
Calling back works for one row and not the other. Same-day callbacks win back about $8,189 of the $11,698 the missed homeowner calls were worth, but only $3,038 of the $10,125 the contractor calls were worth.
A missed contractor call costs next year too
The plumber who couldn't reach you booked someone else, and if that excavator shows up on time, they're the one on the plumber's list next month. Say one contractor in five who uses you becomes a regular and sends four more digs a year. Then the 9 missed contractor calls in this month carried about $8,100 of next year's work on top of the $7,088 lost now.
One of the contractors who calls most is the drain and sewer company. In our drain and sewer missed-call math, the repeat backup that finds a broken line is the call that turns into a replacement, and a trenched replacement needs a dig.
What the phone should and shouldn't do on an excavation call
The caller wants a price and a date. On our plans the AI doesn't quote a dig or give site or safety advice. It asks who's calling (homeowner or contractor, and which company), the address, what needs digging and how deep if they know, the date they need, and whether there's equipment access. Contractor and urgent calls can go straight to the owner's phone, and homeowner quotes get booked for a site visit. Septic installers are among the contractors who call; our septic answering service guide covers their side of the phone.
What it costs to answer an excavator's phone
Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Every plan bills $0.35 a minute past its allowance and answers in English and Spanish. Planning call lengths: homeowner quotes 5 minutes, contractor and urgent calls 3, existing jobs 2, not-a-job 1.5.
| What you forward | Minutes | Standard ($297) | Connected ($497) | Concierge (from $750) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Every call (120) | 385 | $344.25 | $497.00 | from $750.00 |
| Only the calls nobody picks up (43) | 137.5 | $297.00 | $497.00 | from $750.00 |
One saved contractor call covers Standard for the month more than twice. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. Plan details are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a missed call cost an excavation contractor?
On Angi's 2026 prices and our assumptions, about $788 for a missed call from another contractor who needs a dig date, $1,080 for an urgent dig and $251 for a homeowner project quote. In a 120-call month with 43 missed, an owner-operator loses about $14,917, or $552 per missed call from a real customer.
Why is a contractor call worth more than a homeowner call?
Because of the callback. Homeowners are collecting quotes and still answer when you call back, so we assume a callback saves 70% of them. A contractor holding a date for their own customer books the first excavator who confirms, so a callback saves only 30%.
What does excavation cost in 2026?
Angi's 2026 national average is $3,979 from 3,439 verified projects, with most between $1,659 and $6,716. Trenching for plumbing runs $1,500 to $10,000 and pool excavation $400 to $1,500.
Is a contractor who calls an excavator a repeat customer?
Often. In our example one contractor in five becomes a regular and sends four more digs a year, so the 9 missed contractor calls in a month carry about $8,100 of next year's work.
What does an answering service cost an excavation company?
On Local Call AI, our 120-call example month is 385 minutes: $344.25 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute) or $497 on Connected. Forwarding only the 43 calls nobody picks up is about 138 minutes, inside Standard's 250, so $297.
