How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Christmas Light Installer? (By Month, 2026)

Justin McKelvey
Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

On Angi's 2026 Christmas light installation average of $444, a missed quote call costs about $133 in September, $142 in October, $132 in November and $63 in December, and a missed call from a returning customer costs about $120. Across a season with 120 missed real calls, a one-to-two-crew company loses about $14,097, or $117 a call, and 42% of it is in October. The work can't move past Christmas, so a date you didn't sell is gone.

In short: in most trades a missed call is worth about the same in any month. In Christmas lights the date decides it. On Angi's 2026 average of $444, a missed quote call costs about $142 in October and $63 in December, because by December you're out of days to sell. Across a season with 120 missed real calls, a one-to-two-crew company loses about $14,097, or $117 a call. October alone is 42% of that. If you're reading this on November 1, October's gone, and about $4,413 of the example is still in front of you.

Why the date changes the number

Angi's Christmas light guide, updated October 8, 2026, puts the national average at $444 from 2,242 verified projects, with most homeowners paying $220 to $684. That ticket barely moves across the season. What moves is the chance that the call turns into a job, and the chance that you get it back when you call later.

A roofer who misses a call in June can still do the job in July. You can't. Lights that go up December 28 aren't a job, so every install day you didn't sell expires. Our call counts come from the season table in our holiday lighting answering service comparison. The miss, booking and callback rates are our planning assumptions.

Missed call Quote calls Missed Book if answered Callback recovers Lost per missed call Lost
September, early planner 44 9 50% 40% $133.20 $1,198.80
October, the quote rush 140 42 40% 20% $142.08 $5,967.36
November, install days 50 20 35% 15% $132.09 $2,641.80
December, late caller 70 28 15% 5% $63.27 $1,771.56
Last year's customer rebooking 76 21 90% 70% $119.88 $2,517.48
Total 120 $117.47 $14,097.00

September callers are planners and they'll still be there when you call back at 6. October callers are often calling three companies, so a callback tomorrow recovers little. By December most callers are hoping, and only some of them fit before your cutoff, which is why that call is worth less than half of October's: $63 against $142.

We left out November's install-day calls and December's outage calls, because those are customers you already have. They aren't lost revenue on the day. They're what decides the next row.

The rebook row is the one owners skip

A returning customer is the easiest job you'll sell all year, since the design already exists. Calling back usually works, so we gave that call a 70% recovery. It still comes to $119.88, and there are 21 of them.

Now look past one season. If a new October customer comes back for two more years at the same price, that missed call is $426.24, not $142.08. Snow companies count customers the same way, and our snow removal missed-call math lands in the same place. We didn't add that to the table, because we don't know your retention, but you do.

When a missed call costs nothing

Answer everything in this example and you book about 174 houses: 106 new and 68 returning. If one crew hangs 3 houses a day for 40 working days, that's 120 houses, and you're full before the phone stops. So a one-crew company won't lose the whole $14,097. Once the book is full, a missed call costs $0, and December's row goes away. Two crews at 240 houses have room for all of it, so that company loses the full number.

That's why the size of the house matters more than the count. Angi puts a small one-story at $250, a medium two-story at $450 and a large three-story at $900. Run those through the October row and the missed call is $80, $144 or $288. With a limited number of install days, the question is which houses fill them.

What the phone should ask on a lights call

Five questions: One story or two? How much of the house, roofline only or windows and bushes too? Do you own your lights or want ours? Any HOA rules you know of? What date do you need them up by? On our plans the AI doesn't quote a design or per-foot price you didn't write into its script. It takes those answers, books the design visit into the slots you set and tells a late caller your cutoff date, so the owner on the ladder isn't the one saying no.

What it costs to answer a lights company's phone

Our plans: Standard, $297 a month with 250 call minutes. Connected, $497 with 500. Concierge, from $750 with 1,000. Each extra minute is $0.35, and Spanish is included on all of them. The full 780-call season from our comparison, September through January, works out like this:

Season, all 780 calls Minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
September to January 1,956 $1,761.50 $2,534.00 from $3,750.00

At $117 per missed real call, about 15 saved calls cover the Standard season, and about 3 cover a month. A one-crew company that fills up early will get less from this, so count your own open days before you decide. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. The pricing page has the full list.

Open your schedule today and count the install days you have left, then multiply by houses a day. Subtract what's booked. If the answer is above zero, every call this month still has money in it, and you know the date you stop taking new installs. Put your average ticket in our missed-call calculator for the totals. Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a Christmas light installer?

On Angi's 2026 average of $444 and our assumptions, about $133 in September, $142 in October, $132 in November and $63 in December for a new quote call, and about $120 for a returning customer. A season with 120 missed real calls loses about $14,097, or $117 a call.

How much does professional Christmas light installation cost in 2026?

Angi's national average is $444 from 2,242 verified projects, with most homeowners paying $220 to $684. Most installers charge $2 to $5 a linear foot. Angi's averages by home size are $250 for a small one-story, $450 for a medium two-story and $900 for a large three-story.

When do Christmas light companies get the most calls?

In our planning example October is the heaviest month, with 220 calls, 140 of them quote requests. November has 200 calls and December 180. Your dates move with your climate and your marketing.

Is a late-December quote call worth answering?

Yes, but for a different reason. In our example it's worth about $63 in this year's revenue, and most of those callers can't be fit in. Answering still lets you give your cutoff date and offer a first slot for next season.

What does an answering service cost a Christmas light company?

On Local Call AI, our 780-call example season is 1,956 minutes: $1,761.50 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute), $2,534 on Connected or from $3,750 on Concierge. Plans are month-to-month, so a lights-only company isn't obligated to pay through the quiet months.
