How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Junk Removal Company? (It's Rarely Just a Couch, 2026)

Justin McKelvey Founder of Local Call AI. Built it after watching friends in the trades lose thousands of dollars to missed calls.

In short

On Angi's 2026 junk removal prices ($241 average, $75 to $800 by truckload), a missed call costs a junk hauler about $52 on a single item, $88 on a quarter load, $153 on a half load and $270 on a three-quarter or full load. In a 160-call April with 58 missed, a one-truck crew loses about $4,690, or $117 per real customer. Six big-load calls carry 35% of it, and a callback wins back only about $971.

In short: nobody calling a junk hauler knows what a cubic yard is. They say "just a couch," and you find out what they meant when you get there. On Angi's 2026 prices, a missed single-item call costs about $52 and a missed three-quarter or full load about $270. In a 160-call April with 58 missed, a one-truck crew loses about $4,690, or $117 per real customer. Six big-load calls carry 35% of that, and callbacks win back only about $971, because most of these callers want the pile gone and call the next name.

What a junk call is worth in 2026

Angi's junk removal cost guide, updated September 30, 2026, from 44,583 verified projects, puts the national average at $241, with most jobs between $133 and $372. That average hides the only thing that matters on the phone, which is how much of the truck the job fills:

Job Angi's 2026 range
Single bulky item (minimum charge) $60 to $150
Quarter truckload $125 to $200
Half truckload $200 to $400
Three-quarter truckload $400 to $600
Full truckload $600 to $800

Certain words change the ticket even on one item. Angi puts a mattress at $75 to $150, a piano at $200 to $400 and a hot tub at $200 to $600. Stairs push labor up, and freon in a fridge or freezer can too.

The month, sorted by truck space

We price each row at the midpoint of Angi's range. The big row spans Angi's three-quarter and full rows, $400 to $800, so it's $600. How many calls land in each row, how many book and what a callback saves are our planning assumptions.

Missed call Worth when answered Callback recovers Lost per missed call Missed Lost
Single item $57.75 10% $51.98 14 $727.65
Quarter load $97.50 10% $87.75 11 $965.25
Half load $180.00 15% $153.00 9 $1,377.00
Three-quarter or full load $360.00 25% $270.00 6 $1,620.00
Existing customer or scheduling 7 $0.00
Not a job 11 $0.00
Total 58 $4,689.90

That's April for one truck and a two-person crew: 160 calls, of which 40 are single items, 30 quarter loads, 25 half loads, 15 bigger loads, 20 existing customers and 30 aren't jobs (a landfill question, a paint can you can't take, a sales pitch). When both people are carrying a sofa down a staircase, nobody's reaching for a phone, so 36% go unanswered. We picked April because Angi says most homeowners do their construction and renovation projects in spring and early summer, and those projects leave debris behind.

Fifteen of the 40 missed real calls are half loads or bigger, and they carry 64% of the money. The six biggest alone come to $1,620, more than double what all 14 single items lose.

Why callbacks barely help

Someone with a couch on the curb has no reason to wait for you. If nobody answers, they call the next hauler, and whoever can come today gets it. So we give small jobs a 10% callback rate. A garage cleanout is different. Angi tells homeowners to talk to at least three local companies, and someone planning a big job may actually do that, so a same-day callback still has a chance, and we use 25%.

Run every row with no callback at all and the month is $5,661. So all that phone tag wins back $971.10, about 17%. If you also rent cans, our dumpster rental missed-call math shows the opposite case, where a contractor who already rents from you waits for the call back.

Three singles or one half load

Here's the part the average ticket won't show you. Three single-item pickups come to about $315 at the midpoint. One half load comes to about $300. The money's about even, but one is three driveways, three drives and three conversations, and the other is one stop.

So a missed half load isn't just bigger than a missed couch. It's the call that fills the afternoon. That's also why we don't trust the row labels too much. Say 4 of the 14 single-item callers really had a quarter load once somebody asked. The month only goes up $143, to $4,833. Upsizing the small calls is nice. Not missing the big ones is the money.

What the phone should ask on a junk call

Four things size a job before the truck rolls: What's going? Is that everything? Is it upstairs or at the curb? Anything like a hot tub, a piano or an old fridge? "Is that everything?" is the one that moves a caller from the single-item row to the quarter-load row. On our plans the AI doesn't quote a job price. It takes the address and those answers, then books the pickup into the open windows you set. On Concierge, callers can also text a photo of the pile. Our junk removal answering service guide compares the options for this trade.

What it costs to answer a junk hauler's phone

Our Standard plan runs $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Past the allowance it's $0.35 a minute, and every plan answers in English and Spanish. Planning call lengths: a new job 3 minutes, existing customers 2, not-a-job 1.5.

What you forward Minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every call (160) 415 $354.75 $497.00 from $750.00
Only the calls nobody picks up (58) 150.5 $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00

At $117 per missed real customer, two or three saved calls cover a Standard month in April. One saved full load gets you most of the way there. Off season the math is thinner, so forwarding only the calls nobody picks up makes more sense. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. The full plan list is on the pricing page.

Find your own number

Pull last April's invoices and sort them by how much of the truck each job filled, then check your voicemail count for the same month. In our example, half loads and up are 36% of the real calls. If your share is bigger than that, your number is higher than ours. Our missed-call calculator does the multiplication, and other trades are in our 2026 missed-call cost research.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a junk removal company?

On Angi's 2026 prices and our assumptions, about $52 for a single item, $88 for a quarter load, $153 for a half load and $270 for a three-quarter or full load. In a 160-call month with 58 missed, a one-truck crew loses about $4,690, or $117 per missed call from a real customer.

How much does junk removal cost in 2026?

Angi's 2026 national average is $241 from 44,583 verified projects, with most jobs between $133 and $372. By truckload it runs $125 to $200 for a quarter, $200 to $400 for a half, $400 to $600 for three-quarters and $600 to $800 for a full load. The minimum for one bulky item is $60 to $150.

Do callbacks work for junk removal?

Not very well. Small-job callers want it gone and call the next hauler, so we assume a callback saves 10% of them, and 25% on the biggest loads where people are comparing quotes. In our example callbacks win back about $971 of a possible $5,661.

Which junk removal calls are worth the most?

Half loads and bigger. In our example they're 15 of 40 missed real calls and 64% of the money. Words like hot tub or piano also matter, because Angi prices those at $200 to $600 and $200 to $400 for one item.

What does an answering service cost a junk removal company?

On Local Call AI, our 160-call example month is 415 minutes: $354.75 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute) or $497 on Connected. Forwarding only the 58 calls nobody picks up is 150.5 minutes, inside Standard's 250, so $297.
