How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Boiler Repair Company? (No Heat Doesn't Wait, 2026)

In short

On HomeAdvisor's boiler prices ($425 average service, most repairs $190 to $660, replacement $4,800 and up), a missed no-heat call costs a boiler company about $477, a missed tune-up about $57 and a missed call about replacing an old boiler about $864. In a 120-call cold month with 48 missed, that's about $8,884, or $355 per real customer. No-heat calls carry 64% of it, and just 3 replacement calls carry another 29%.

In short: the first cold week is the most expensive week of a boiler company's year to miss a call. A missed no-heat call costs about $477, because almost nobody waits for a callback in a cold house. A missed tune-up costs only $57. And a missed call about an old boiler costs about $864 on average, because some of those are a $4,800 replacement. In a 120-call cold month with 48 missed, a two-tech boiler company loses about $8,884, or $355 per real customer.

What a boiler job is worth

HomeAdvisor's boiler service guide (the page is labeled 2025 data; it's the newest national read we could get):

  • The average boiler service costs $425, and most repairs run $190 to $660. The full range is $95 to $1,500.
  • Labor runs a flat $150 to $300, or $75 to $130 an hour, and higher for emergency, after-hours, weekend or holiday calls.
  • By fuel: gas repairs $100 to $400, electric $200 to $450, oil $200 to $500.
  • Replacement is a $4,800 to $9,000 budget.
  • Annual service contracts often lower the per-visit cost.

Three kinds of boiler call

We price each call from those numbers and our own planning assumptions about who books and who waits:

  • No heat. Priced at $660, the top of the typical repair range, since these often come after hours. 85% book when you answer. If you miss them, a callback saves only 15%, because a cold house means the next name on the list gets called right away.
  • A tune-up or annual service. Priced at $190, the bottom of the range. 60% book, and half still take your callback.
  • An old boiler that keeps failing. Priced at $4,800, the bottom of the replacement budget. Only 30% turn into a replacement, but a callback still saves 40%, because people get more than one quote.
Missed call Worth when answered Callback recovers Lost per missed call Missed Lost
No heat $561.00 15% $476.85 12 $5,722.20
Tune-up or annual service $114.00 50% $57.00 10 $570.00
Old boiler, replacement $1,440.00 40% $864.00 3 $2,592.00
Existing customer or scheduling 11 $0.00
Not a job 12 $0.00
Total 48 $8,884.20

The month: 120 calls in a cold month, of which 30 are no-heat, 25 are tune-ups, 8 are about an old boiler, 27 are existing customers and 30 aren't jobs. Both techs are in basements, so 40% go to voicemail. That's $355.37 per missed call from a real customer.

Three calls carry 29% of the month

The three replacement calls are 12% of the real calls missed, and 29% of the money. No-heat calls are 64%. Tune-ups are 40% of the real missed calls and only 6% of the loss.

That's the opposite of how a boiler shop's phone feels. The tune-up calls are the steady, pleasant ones. But they're also the ones that wait for you. The caller worth stopping for is the one saying "it's the third time this winter," because that's a repair today and a replacement quote tomorrow. A mixed shop has the same split with a different shape, and our HVAC missed-call math prices that version.

The contract you didn't sell

A no-heat customer is the easiest person in the world to sign up for an annual service plan, because they're still cold when you offer it. HomeAdvisor notes that annual contracts often lower the per-visit cost, which makes it an easy yes. A missed no-heat call loses that conversation too. We didn't put a dollar figure on it here, since contract prices vary by shop. Count how many of your plan customers started with an emergency, and you'll know what it's worth to you.

What the phone should ask on a boiler call

Three questions sort the call: Is there heat right now? Gas, oil or electric? How old is the boiler, and has this happened before? The fuel tells you which tech and parts to send. The age tells you whether a replacement quote belongs on the visit. On our plans the AI doesn't quote a job price and doesn't diagnose. It takes the address and those answers and marks no-heat calls urgent for the owner. Our HVAC answering service guide compares the options for heating shops.

What it costs to answer a boiler company's phone

Local Call AI's Standard plan is $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected is $497 with 500, and Concierge starts at $750 with 1,000. Minutes past a plan's allowance are $0.35 each, and Standard already answers in English and Spanish. Planning call lengths: no-heat 4 minutes, tune-up 3, old boiler 5, existing customers 2, not-a-job 1.5.

What you forward Minutes Standard ($297) Connected ($497) Concierge (from $750)
Every call (120) 334 $326.40 $497.00 from $750.00
Only the calls nobody picks up (48) 133 $297.00 $497.00 from $750.00

One saved no-heat call ($477 in the table) more than covers a Standard month. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. Full plan details are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a missed call cost a boiler repair company?

On HomeAdvisor's prices and our assumptions, about $477 for a no-heat call, $57 for a tune-up and $864 for a call about replacing an old boiler. In a 120-call cold month with 48 missed, a two-tech boiler company loses about $8,884, or $355 per missed call from a real customer.

How much does boiler repair cost?

HomeAdvisor's guide puts average boiler service at $425, with most repairs between $190 and $660 and a full range of $95 to $1,500. Gas repairs run $100 to $400, electric $200 to $450 and oil $200 to $500.

Which boiler calls are worth answering first?

No-heat calls. In our example they carry 64% of the month's loss, because a callback saves only 15% of them. Calls about an old boiler that keeps failing come next, since a few of those are a replacement.

Can a tune-up call wait for a callback?

Usually. We assume a callback still wins half of them, so a missed tune-up costs about $57. That's why tune-ups can wait in a cold week and no-heat calls can't.

What does an answering service cost a boiler repair company?

On Local Call AI, our 120-call example month is 334 minutes: $326.40 on Standard ($297 with 250 minutes, then $0.35 a minute) or $497 on Connected. Forwarding only the 48 calls nobody picks up is 133 minutes, inside Standard's 250, so $297.
