In short

On Angi's 2026 national landscaping average of $3,518, a missed call about a new project costs a landscaping company about $528, or about $706 once you count the cleanups an install client buys afterward. An outdoor kitchen caller is about $2,325. Miss 8 project calls in a spring month and it's about $7,147.

Bottom line: on Angi's 2026 national landscaping average of $3,518, a missed call about a new project costs a landscaping company about $528. Count the cleanups an install client tends to buy afterward and it's about $706. A caller who wants an outdoor kitchen is about $2,325. Miss 8 project calls in a spring month and it's about $7,147.

About the author: I'm Justin McKelvey, and I own Local Call AI, an AI receptionist for contractors. I'm biased toward answering the phone. Every number below is worked out in the open so you can check it.

The problem with a landscaping call: you don't know the job yet

A plumber can usually guess the ticket from the first sentence. A landscaper can't. "We want to redo the yard" can mean $1,500 of front-yard beds or a $40,000 backyard with a patio, a wall and lighting. Angi's 2026 guide, updated September 23 from 32,752 projects, puts the national average at $3,518, with most homeowners paying $1,248 to $6,070. Then it lists a full backyard renovation at $15,000 to $50,000. That's the same voicemail, at ten times the money.

So the missed call isn't one number. It's a spread, and the expensive end of it is the caller most likely to hang up and call the next company on the list.

What one missed project call is worth

Our planning assumptions, so swap in your own: an answered project caller books 30% of the time, and half the time a callback is too late, so a missed call keeps 15% of the job's value in play.

Caller wants Job value (Angi 2026) Lost per missed call
Typical landscaping project $3,518 average $527.70
New patio $2,000 to $5,800 (mid $3,900) $585.00
Outdoor kitchen $6,000 to $25,000 (mid $15,500) $2,325.00
Full backyard renovation $15,000 to $50,000 (mid $32,500) $4,875.00

The part lawn-care math leaves out

An install client doesn't disappear when the crew packs up. Somebody has to keep the new beds looking like the design, and the company that built it is the obvious call. Angi puts a yard cleanup at $190 to $1,000, about $595 in the middle.

Say 1 in 3 install clients books a spring and a fall cleanup for 3 years. That's $595 × 2 × 3 = $3,570, spread over 3 clients, or $1,190 a client. At the same 15%, that adds $178.50 to every missed install call, which takes the typical project from $527.70 to $706.20. If you also mow, the route stop is worth more on top; our lawn care missed-call math puts a weekly stop at about $866 a season.

What a spring month costs

Say 50 calls come in during a busy stretch in April. Most are current clients, suppliers and "can you come look at my sprinklers." You're on a job and miss 8 new-project calls: 6 typical installs, 1 patio and 1 outdoor kitchen.

  • 6 × $706.20 = $4,237.20
  • 1 patio = $585.00
  • 1 outdoor kitchen = $2,325.00

That's $7,147.20, and a third of it is one caller. The winter phone won't look anything like this, which is why the spring phone is the one to fix.

What the phone should ask on a landscaping call

What do you want done, front or back? Plants, hardscape like a patio or wall, or both? Roughly how big is the area? Do you have a budget range in mind? When do you want it finished? Then book a site visit in the slots you set. A caller who says "patio, retaining wall, before summer" goes to the top of your callback list.

It never quotes a project price. Landscaping can't be priced on a phone call, and Angi's own range runs from $4.50 to $40 a square foot depending on the work. It doesn't answer permit questions either; Angi puts permits at $500 to $2,750 on structural jobs, and that conversation belongs to you.

What answering costs

Our plans: Standard at $297 a month with 250 call minutes, Connected at $497 with 500, Concierge from $750 with 1,000. Minutes past your plan are $0.35, and every plan answers in English or Spanish. The 50-call stretch above, at 4 minutes a call, is 200 minutes, so it fits in Standard at $297. One booked patio covers it. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only. The landscaping answering service comparison lines up the options, and the pricing page has the plan details.

Your number

Pull last spring: how many projects you sold, what they averaged, and how many first calls went to voicemail. Multiply, then add what those clients spent on upkeep afterward. That's what an unanswered ring costs you. Every trade we've worked out is in our 2026 missed-call cost research, including fence companies, which share your spring crush.

Frequently asked questions

About $528 for a typical project on Angi's 2026 average of $3,518, or about $706 counting the cleanups an install client buys afterward. An outdoor kitchen caller is about $2,325 and a full backyard renovation about $4,875. That's at a 30% booking rate and half of callbacks failing, which are our assumptions; use your own.

Angi's national average is $3,518, from 32,752 projects, with most homeowners paying $1,248 to $6,070. A front yard runs $1,500 to $5,000 and a full backyard renovation $15,000 to $50,000.

Should an AI receptionist quote landscaping prices?

No. The same request can be a $1,500 job or a $40,000 one. The AI should ask what the caller wants, front or back, plants or hardscape, rough size, budget range and timing, then book a site visit and leave every number to you.

What about calls from current clients?

Most of a landscaper's spring calls are from people you already work for. On Local Call AI you set what happens: the usual setup takes the message and texts it to you or the crew lead, so a sprinkler question doesn't bury a new project call.
