How Much Does a Missed Call Cost a Fence Company? (By Job Size, 2026)

In short

On Angi's 2026 fence installation average of $3,277, a missed estimate call costs a fence company about $786. On a quarter-acre job it's about $1,164, and on a half-acre job about $3,257. Twelve missed new-install calls in a spring month come to about $9,438, or roughly 4 jobs. The bigger the yard, the more each call is worth.

In short: on Angi's 2026 average of $3,277, a missed fence estimate call costs about $786. That's a blended number, though, and fence jobs aren't blended. A 150-foot job makes the call worth about $840, and a half-acre job about $3,257. Twelve missed new-install calls in a spring month come to about $9,438, which is roughly 4 jobs. And you won't know which yard it was, because they didn't leave a message.

What one missed fence call is worth

Angi's fence installation guide, updated October 13, 2026, puts the national average at $3,277 from 2,968 verified projects, with most homeowners paying $1,860 to $4,845. Fence is sold on an estimate, so the call doesn't turn straight into a job. We assume 30% of answered estimate calls become a job, and that a callback saves 20% of the calls you miss, since a homeowner who reaches a voicemail usually calls the next company.

$3,277 times 30% is $983.10. Take off the 20% you'd save with a callback and the missed call costs $786.48. Those two rates are our assumptions, so swap in yours.

The size of the yard does the rest

Angi breaks the cost out by property size, and the spread is wide. Your calls run from a short repair to a whole property line.

Job, from Angi's table Linear feet Job price Lost per missed call
1/8 acre 150 $3,500 $840.00
1/4 acre 220 $4,850 $1,164.00
1/2 acre 590 $13,570 $3,256.80

The other end of the range matters just as much. Angi puts chain link at $8 to $40 a linear foot, so a 40-foot run is $320 to $1,600. That job can barely pay for the trip. Our fence company answering service comparison calls this the leak: answer badly and you drive across town to measure 40 feet of chain link. So the phone has two jobs. Don't lose the half-acre yard, and don't send the truck out blind.

What a spring month costs

Our comparison uses a 180-call spring month as its planning number. Plenty of those are repairs, gate problems and questions about jobs in progress. Say 40 are new installs and you miss 30% while you're setting posts. That's 12 calls.

12 × $786.48 = $9,437.76, or about 3.6 jobs at the booking rate above, all from calls you never heard ring. A January with 50 calls won't look anything like it, so the spring phone is the one to fix.

When a missed call costs nothing

A two-man crew can only set so much fence, and spring backlogs can run for weeks. If you're booked out past when the homeowner wants it done, the missed call may cost you little, because you'd have lost that job on the schedule anyway. It's also true of the small jobs. A missed call for 40 feet of chain link 45 minutes away isn't a loss. The trouble is you can't tell which call was which from a missed-call list. Concrete crews sort estimates the same way, as our concrete contractor missed-call math shows.

What the phone should ask on a fence call

Five questions: How many feet, about? What material? New fence or replacing one? Is it around a pool? Has the HOA signed off? On our plans the AI doesn't quote a per-foot price you didn't write into its script, and it doesn't tell a caller what their city's pool code requires. It takes those answers and books the estimate into the slots you set, so you can see the job size before you drive.

What it costs to answer a fence company's phone

Our plans: Standard, $297 a month with 250 call minutes. Connected, $497 with 500. Concierge, from $750 with 1,000. Each extra minute is $0.35, and Spanish is included on all of them. The 180-call spring month is 540 minutes: $398.50 on Standard or $511 on Connected. One saved average job pays for about 8 of those months. We integrate with Jobber and JobNimbus only.
